"Painting is the art of using some form of pigment on canvas, paper, vellum, or parchment to create an image that not only reflects real life, but the artist's interpretation of that life; emotion translated into two dimensions and color, or lack of same. The school of Impressionism focuses on a moment in time, the 'impression' of movement in real life-- light on water, clouds across the sun, unusual visual angles, ordinary subject material captured at one, stolen, focused second." Sophie smiled at the class. "It started as a reaction to the static settings of Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite painting, an effort to move forward into something freer than the politically mandated and approved painting of the Paris juries."

"Claude Monet was a founder of this movement, concentrating on landscapes and nature studies. Disillusioned with the traditional art taught at universities, with endless copies of the Masters being done in galleries, he decided to paint what he saw.

"Among Monet’s farthest travels in search of new stimuli was a trip to Venice in 1908. In San Giorgio Maggiore-- also known as Dusk in Venice -- everything is half-glimpsed through a veil of mist, with the sun shining through from behind the church in the center. Like Monet’s notorious Impression Sunrise of 1872, this work might stand as a classic Impressionist statement – except that, by this stage in his career, Monet was not so strict about working entirely on the spot, and very likely he sketched this and his other Venetian subjects on site and completed them at Giverny.

"This painting is now owned by the National Museum and Art Gallery in Cardiff, Wales. It has been valued at over $100 million dollars, as being one of the premier examples of Impressionism in the world."

Sophie hit a button, and the Danger Shop setting changed so that they were in art gallery, with San Giorgio Maggiore hanging on the wall, as well as several other Impressionist paintings. The room contained two entrances, a bench, and nothing else.

"This room is equipped with a temperature sensor which goes off if the temperature near the painting rises by more than three degrees; since the current temperature in the room is seventy degrees, a person's body heat will naturally set it off. At that point, steel doors descend and trap the person attempting to remove the painting in the room until security arrives. There are also cameras, which record your every move."

"Half of you will be thieves, intent on stealing this painting for yourself; half will be police, insurance agents, and security guards, intent on catching the culprit who intends on removing the canvas from the frame." Sophie smiled. "And yes, you may use whatever powers you have. Keep in mind that the value of the painting decreases if it is damaged, hmm? Good luck."

First person to sign in is a robber; second person is a cop, and so on down the line. (At least, you should start out in that group...)

You may attempt this in groups, with whatever materials you can smuggle into an open art museum.

Annja was carefully examining the painting and the wall.

One day she might stop taking classes that reminded her of Roux.

Maybe.

Shilo walked over and looked the painting over for a moment. "This is much nicer than what we have up at the gallery right now," she said, after some consideration. "I mean, what we have up is interesting, but this... this is moving."

Oh right, class work. "Um, well, carry on," she added, and walked by, hoping that it was nonchalant. And then she sat down on one of the benches and took out a compact, using it to keep an eye on Annja.

At least Joan knew a little about being a cop thanks to her dad. She examined the area, looking for potential weak spots.

And Claudia, keeping it subtle in her polka dot leggings and paint-spattered shirt (and fedora, very important when being a cop!), watched her from a distance.

Raven really wasn't sure about using her powers this way, but it was the assigned activity for the class, so....

She swept her arms upward and disappeared in a cloud of smoke, reappearing in front of the painting. It was small enough for her to carry (though the frame was heavier than she anticipated), so she seized it from the wall, then vanished again, reappearing outside the room. It wouldn't matter if the alarms went off; the steel doors would not contain her.

Ellie was an insurance agent today. She looked around the area, looking for clues.

Who went rappelling this weekend, and may find that useful.

Parker was eyeing the senario with a practiced eye. This class was going to be fun.

"Did you have an enjoyable weekend, Parker?" Sophie asked idly, watching the progress of some of the students. "I understand some people's possessions became... people?"
