Creative Writing [Tuesday, 5th Period]

Rick had sent an email informing his class to meet at the main campfire, where he sat, typing on his laptop.

"Hey there," he said, grinning, once the class had arrived. "My name's Richard Castle, and I'll be taking you for Creative Writing, and before anyone asks, yes, I am the same Richard Castle who wrote the Derek Storm novels. Basically what we'll be spending the next few weeks doing, is going over some of the process, and with any luck you will be taking an idea and taking all the way though to a finished story."

"And ideas are where it all starts. They can be character-based, they can plot-based, but without an idea, a seed to grow from, you can't even start writing a story. However, as we all know, sometimes it can be hard to find ideas and inspiration, which is why I bought this." Rick held up a large glass jar filled with slips of paper. "The Big Jar-O-Prompts."

Rick shook the jar as he continued "So, what's going to happen is that you're all going to give me your names, where you're from, why you choose this class, and something interesting about yourself, and I will give you an idea from the Big Jar-O-Prompts, which you will build your story around. Now, how you incorporate it in your story is up to you, but I do want to be able to see some form of it in the finished product."

"Also, I'm going to need a couple of teaching assistants, so anyone who's interested come up and see me after class."

"Blair Waldorf," Blair said. "Also from New York, Upper East Side. I'm taking this class to add to the skills that I can put on my resume for my application to Yale."

Blair felt the simple fact of being herself was more than interesting.

"I'm Joan Girardi," she said. "I'm from Maryland, I'm in this class because my mother chose it for me and one interesting fact about me is that I once stopped a school shooting."

"I could buy and sell most people here," Blair replied.

Priestly hoped he wasn't going to get points docked from his grade for not having heard of the "Derek Storm novels".

"I'm Priestly," said Priestly. "From Santa Cruz. I'm in this class 'cause it sounded like it'd be less serious than the getting out of debt one. And two weeks ago I spent several days as a chameleon."

"Hi," Valentine gave a slight smile and a general wave, "I'm Valentine Wiggin; I'm from Greensboro, North Carolina. I chose this class because I've always been interested in writing, and, eventually, I want to write the living histories of the space colonies. I guess that'd be my 'something interesting.' I'm a little more than a century and a half in the future, and I hope to be a part of the first group of humans going out to colonize new planets."

Of course, there was a lot more she could say, especially how writing was more than just an interest and she was actually a well-known political theorist in her own world, one said by some to have helped spawn a whole war, but it's not like any of that was important.

Priestly kind of loved his prompt. He shrugged at Rick's question. "Damned if I know. One minute I'm re-blue-ing my hair, the next, I can change skin colors and lick my eyeballs."

"Frost, Emma Frost," she drawled, giving her classmates a slow smile. "Originally from Boston, but I'd just moved to New York before coming here."

"I'm taking this class for college applications also," she continued with a nod to Blair, "and I'm a telepath. And yes, that means that I do know what you did last weekend, and no, I really don't give a damn."
