TeeVee for Beginners, Friday Period Two

"We are nearing the end of our time together," Mitchell started. He was seated on the back of his own couch, lounging in his own way. "So you'll all have to kiss each other off and say goodbye for good. At least 'till you run into each other on the stairs when you head back home from class."

He gestured to the TV, which was now set up in the middle of the room. "Last week, you picked a program," he said, "Today, I want to hear about it. Did you have fun, or was it boring? Was it what you expected? What did you look for in a program to begin with? Would you recommend it to anyone else? Who were your favorite characters, that sort of thing. And then I'll judge you all ruthlessly. Better start cowering behind your sofas."

He grinned. "Then as a final treat," he finished, "I've got one last thing to show you, so don't run out. I'm sure all the alcohol and teenage flirtation can hold for another twenty minutes."

"I picked a bunch of best-of sports stuff," Zack said, grinning. "Which was actually pretty fun to watch. Most of it was people scoring goals or whatever, but there were a few good fights in there, too."

Watching sports was a great outlet for a kid who liked to carry a sword around and kill monsters!

"There was hockey and baseball and football and American football, and I didn't really know there was a difference until I watched. There isn't any America where I'm from. And some track and field stuff, too. Foot-races and all of that."

A pause for consideration.

"The hockey fights were the most interesting."

Zack grinned sheepishly.

"It's funny to watch," he decided. "A bunch of guys in helmets and padding, trying to beat one another up with sticks while they slide backwards on their own skates.

"I picked something with a thin plot but lots of explosions," Alex said. "The characters were basically stick figure in the sense that they had no development but the effects were really cool."

"A lot of cars," Alex recalled. "A few buildings. A yacht!"

"There was apparently a bomb on it and it was better to blow it up then to let the ship run into a harbor full of people and explode," Alex said. "It was kind of lame ending but the explosion was pretty cool."

"I grabbed a couple seasons of Wendy the Werewolf Stalker," Dinah said happily munching on some chips. "Which I loved. I hadn't seen them all until just now."

"The characters are way funny. Especially Wendy's best friend. And the werewolf she's in love with is sooooo awesome." Dinah turned a little red, then grinned. "And the mocking factor is high, they zap every werewolf cliche' and make fun of high school TV series too. 'He is a wolf. They... are poodles.'" Dinah snickered. "Plus Wendy gets killed a couple times and always gets better. And some of the evil werewolves are hilarious."

"I watched 'Darkest Night,'" Jack volunteered, then rummaged in his brain for a bit of faint praise. "I ... the actors were well-cast."

Easy to look at, anyhow. He grinned at Tony. "And the production work was excellent given how little they had to work with."

No. It really wasn't.

"I think the scripts seem to have been written by a particularly silly teenage girl, and the monster costumes always look like they were made from things someone swept up from under the icebox," Jack admitted. "Though it isn't a bad way to waste time. But your movies were better."

Not sucking up! Really.

"I picked the pivotal second season of Bitterwoman after they rebooted and she stopped chasing Nazis and lived in the 70's with better hair."

"A little from column A, a little from column B," Francine said seriously. "Plus when I say reboot I mean re-boot. Her heels got like, three inches taller and she was still kicking butt!"

"I started out watching an episode of Rumor Gal," Adora said. "But then I became interested in what was happening to the people and couldn't stop until I'd seen all there was. I've decided I don't appreciate these cliffhangers and think shows should stop leaving people on the side of a mountain."
