Rangering!, Friday, Period Five [ 06/19 ].

"Good afternoon, students!" The usual brusque cheer, the usual clearing in the hilly woods, a usual Friday afternoon for Rangering! Except that the students might be noticing a great deal of other visitors in the class today, furry visitors and scaly ones, winged ones and shelled ones. There were all sorts of critters and creatures everywhere today. "I hope you find your day well," Minsc conintiued, "and if not? Suck it up! Now's a good time to start! We're talking with animals today, so it's always good to be in a good mood when you do that, because animals can tell that sort of thing and be really nasty if you don't like your attitude!"

"As rangers, as you have hopefully noticed by now, we must be very attuned to nature! We rangers do that by communicating with animals; if we did it with plants, we'd be druids, and they don't get nearly as awesome of weapons. So animals it is, then! Some rangers, like myself, are so attuned to animal communication that we have a faithful animal companion, right, Boo? Others of us are just naturally born animal communicators, right, Lady Blysse?" He gave the girl a warm nod. "Why, I'd say she's probably even better than me with wolves, and, if the lady does not protest, maybe she can help answer questions you might have about better communicating with animals."

"As for me, the advice I can give is this: animals are people, too! Just ones with claws and fangs and other things to hurt you with. So be respectful, keep in mind that they are other intelligent creatures and be mindful of cues: warning cues, welcoming ones. Pay attention to how they respond; be warm and inviting. Don't make sudden moves, unless you're dealing with something that is trying to get you to prove yourself. To help, there are a variety of delicious things for animals to eat available; many of them will be glad for the gift, but watch out! Some may be offended by the bribe. Communication with animals is often just about feeling it; it is not something that can be taught, but something that must be lived."

"I will do my best if you have questions, though, and maybe Lady Blysse and Blind Seer can throw in some advice as well. I'd say they've got the animal communication thing down pretty well!"

"Greetings, Boo!" Prince Edward exclaimed boisterously. "I take it you are well this gllllorious day?"

Ah, but Edward was not certain about the squirrels. "I have rum for you tiny woodland creature!"

He beamed.

Making good with the squirrels was a most excellent idea!

"Greeting's jumpy one!" he voiced loud and strong. "Do not be afraid of me, it is I, Prince Edward of Andalasia!"

"So, you're a blue deer," Arthur said, tactfully. "I take it you don't actually converse, but we may as well try."

He had had experiences with four-footed creatures of great import in the past. The deer seemed positively safe, especially considering his mood.

A pity for him that he wasn't particularly talky in a mood like this, or this might have gone better.

Prince Edward took one look at the wolf and tossed towards it a big fat sausage link. "Hello, my friend! Have you been on any fine hunts lately? Ahhh, but what I wouldn't give to see a troll stomping through the forest. I tell you," he laughed heartily, "it wouldn't stomp for long!"

Gasp!

The thing looked positively vile.

Prince Edward waved at it, at least thankful that the thing told him its name. "Hello, Bob! Forgive me if I do not extend a hand."

"That's a lovely purse," Ben said, crouching down to be at pig level.

One might expect Firekeeper to immediately try and converse with the wolf. And one would normally be right, except the wolf seems quite happy where he is (if a little curious) and the bear looks rather unamused.

Firekeeper knows all too well that an unamused bear can lead to badness.

"Hello, and well met," she calls out, using the language of beasts instead of her clumsy human speech.

"Aww!" K-Mart couldn't help aww-ing at the puppy a little, she really couldn't. "Hey, little guy." She held a hand out to him.

"Hi," Tahiri told the turtle.

. . . it was only one syllable, and was probably the slowest her end of this conversation would get. This might not go well.
