Healthy Diet and Living; Wednesday, Period One [ 05/13 ].

"Good morning!" Daisy, it would seem, had come into the classroom a bit early, to take to moving all the desks and chairs in the one part of the home ec room aside and lay down some mats, as well as brew some coffee. Good stuff. It's not like they were in the station. So she was having herself a giant mug of it, just because she was going into the station later. "Before we do anything, I'd like you all to help yourself to some coffee; there's tea, too, of course, if you're not a fan. Just a little something to wake us up a bit because it's early and I don't want anybody nodding off with what we're working on today."

"So far, we've focused, of course, a lot on staying healthy through what we eat and last week we touched on health through exercise. So we've got the body covered, but what about the mind? Keeping your head straight and healthy is equally important, and there are lots of ways to do that. Some people find their centering in a hobby or an activity, for example." Daisy would not be mentioning her own, as it was probably not classroom appropriate, ahem. "A lot of people use meditation, as well, and so we'll be taking some time to do that today. Meditation is a great way to just stop for a moment, give your brain a rest, and come out of it feeling as rejuvinated as a good night's sleep, if you get good enough at it. It'll help put things into focus if everything's seeming to get a little crazy, just by stopping for a moment, and focusing on just breathing. Our bodies tend to do that naturally, the whole breathing thing, but it's amazing how it can change us by slowing down and noticing."

"A lot of times, meditation works best by focusing on one thing. Your breathing, an object, a word, an image, a sound. Since I don't want that one thing to be our stomachs, we're going to start today by making a quick and easy breakfast, satisfy our stomachs before satisfying our minds. While we work on those and have some coffee, here's some information on meditation to look over,"--she had doubts about including that last one, but, come on, they were teenagers, it might be the only one they'd bother reading, and that was better than nothing-- "and if you did get a chance to get to that dinner, let's hear about it. If not, no big deal. And then we'll hit the mats and try some meditation."

"Oh, and next week is our last class. I'd like for you all to look into bringing in your own healthy recipe to share with everyone as a final assignment."

Alex was fine with taking a free coffee and absently listening to the lecture. His preference for relaxing would either be flat out sleeping or other fun, interactive activities.

Parfaits? Alex hadn't had a parfait in...forever. He figured if he followed the instructions, he couldn't mess it up too badly but he would have just preferred to go with straight up ice cream.

Alex would have preferred a bed but he'd learned to sleep anywhere that was quiet since that had been rare for him in the past. He stretched out on the mat, closed his eyes and got to breathing slowly.

He could deal with meditation.

Angela was... okay, not hungover yet. But that's because she'd been drunk enough, and out late enough, to still be on the edge of tipsy.

She was going to feel rougher in an hour or so, but for now she was actually not feeling so bad, and even half paying attention.

With some coffee in her, Angela could totally deal with yogurt and fruit.

What could really go wrong with that, anyway? Easy.

With her hangover, about starting to kick in, meditation didn't sound half bad.

Angela was less concentrating on her breathing than she was ignoring that building headache. Maybe sleeping. In a minute.

Penelope helped herself to a cup of coffee and settled in to listen to the lecture.

Penelope had never had a parfait but she followed directions easily enough to try and make one. They sounded wonderful.

This was different but it wasn't uncomfortable. She just wondered if anyone was sneaking peaks at her with her eyes closed. That thought was a tad unnerving.

Coffee. Claudia added more sugar and milk to it than would be considered strictly necessary to still call the drink "coffee" and not "hot coffee ice cream."

Claudia thought the parfait would be better with chocolate chips in it, but she wasn't all "hell no, I don't like no parfait" about it.
