Flight & Flying [Tuesday, June 16, 4th period]

Anakin was nodding off as he leaned against the door leading into the flight shed.

Not that he would admit that. If asked, he was meditating. While standing up. And kind of snoring.

His eyes cracked open when most of the students arrived. "Today you're going to avoid flying into black holes," he said. "You're going to make the Kessel Run, though if I hear of any of you becoming drug runners--which was what this particular route was used for--you will be very, very sorry."

He flicked his hand towards the wall, where a two dimensional map of the 18-parsec run was illuminated. "The route takes you around The Maw--which is a series of black holes--and leads you through an uninhabitable—but far easier to navigate—area of space called The Pit." He smiled a little at Ben, who he was sure knew this entire area by heart. "The Pit is an asteroid cluster encased in a nebula arm, which makes sensors and pilots go virtually blind. There's a high chance that pilots, weary from the long flight through real space, will crash into an asteroid."

He arched up an eyebrow. "And yes, I know that parsec is a unit of time. If you swing closer to the Maw, you can cut the distance, and thus the time of the flight. But more likely, you'll get sucked into a black hole and be crushed."

Anakin waved his hand, and the map was replaced by a picture of the ship they'd be flying. "This ship and its," he swallowed back an "irritating" "pilot made the run in under 12 parsecs, which I think stands as the fastest time through..." he shot Ben a questioning look.

"Dad and Uncle Han shaved some time off of that a few years later," Ben corrected.

Anakin looked annoyed. He hadn't shaved much off of the original twelve.

"Very well. Climb into the Falcon, try not to hit asteroids, black holes or the ships that are chasing you."

Yes, it's a piece of junk. Things will break as you fly. It's part of the Falcon's charm.

You know what, Tahiri was going to stand here for a few minutes and indulge in an uncontrollable giggle fit at the idea of her flying the Falcon. Yes, it was a simulation, but . . . the Falcon, seriously? Like Han would ever let her. Like she'd even ask.

It was pretty damn hysterical from her point of view, and she'd spent a decent bit of time on the actual Falcon.

She noted, with a brief frown, the copilot's chair -- much larger than the one she was used to seeing. She'd drown in that chair. Well, that pretty much guaranteed that this sim of the ship wasn't going to have her quarters in it. Um. Not that the idea of just going and hiding there would work in the sim anyway.

On the plus side, once she was over the giggle fit and sat down at the helm only to have systems start failing on her left and right, at least she knew it wasn't just her. She didn't start swearing, though; she couldn't do that justice.

Ben was trying very hard not to bounce all over the place like Zack some kind of a puppy. "The Falcon? Really?"

He slid into the pilot's chair and looked over his shoulder.

He didn't expect Uncle Han to come out and yell at him for being in his chair.

...okay, he totally did.

For once Rose wasn't tempted to stare at the controls. It probably helped this was a slightly scary piece of junk and not a legend to her.

She piloted the ship carefully through the practice run, only swearing and ducking once when a piece of paneling flipped up and smacked into the - was it a windshield if it was in a ship?

The Falcon being from way past Zayne's time, he had no special feelings for it.

Until the lights went out when he tried to turn. The special feeling was "annoyance."

Make the Kessel Run!

Anakin made the run in 12. The people who survive generally take the full 18.

Most people don't survive.

Ben had heard about this run entirely too many times not to try skirting too close to the Maw.

He moved close, the Falcon's shielding failed and he sucked into a black hole.

"Fierfek," he swore.

Once she finally got it out of her head that any second now Han was going to ask what in blazes she was doing in the pilot's seat (because she needed any more reasons to be jumpy while flying), Tahiri didn't do so badly, all things considered.

Sure, she'd been on a pace to take the full 18 parsecs because she wasn't getting too close to the Maw, thanks because it MAKES PEOPLE CRAZY, but she'd been doing okay avoiding black holes. It was just that, about a fifth of the way through the run, a couple of drive units failed spectacularly right about the same time that a pursuing ship forced her into an evasive maneuver she couldn't handle that ripped off a section of hull plating, and really, if the shields hadn't failed just after she started the run and if Tahiri hadn't gone and dialed the inertial compensators back up to full she might not have crashed head-on into that asteroid. She might've still lost half the ship (okay, that was a ridiculously optimistic estimate, and really, so, so glad this was a sim again), but that would've been an improvement.

This was going in the "Things Not To Write Home About" column, but wow, did her respect for Han ever go up about three dozen notches.

Zayne probably wouldn't have survived in a good ship. This ship made total and complete failure a certainty.

As luck would have it, though, Zayne survived, making the run in 17 parsecs. Of course, he lost the hyperdrive, communications, the navcomputer only worked sporadically, there was a strange noise he couldn't identify, he never did figure out the lights, and to say that the ship was limping along after taking too much fire from the pursuers would be nicer than was at all deserved.

Zayne had no clue how this had happened.

Ben, despite getting sucked into a black hole, was in an amazing mood. He didn't care that it wasn't the real Falcon. He'd flown it!

Tahiri was laughing when she stumbled out of the sim, despite the fact that she'd created one hell of a simulated ball of flame. "This is why I leave that brand of craziness to your family, and sit in the passenger seat," she informed Ben.

John was very awake and well-rested. Having a go at the Falcon was made more entertaining by having helped load it with supplies on occasion.
