Storytelling, Fifth Period, THURSDAY 6/3

"Today's theme, is folks songs." Tim said when the students had arrived. "Which means that participation today is more voluntary than usual. "Folks songs are, basically, old songs that tell a story. What's weird to think is, all of these songs were popular songs when they were written. Makes you wonder if today's chart toppers will be sung around a campfire in a few hundred years doesn't it."

He cleared his throat and tried not to be embarrassed. "My apologies if you don't like my singing. If so, keep it to yourself please." And with that, he sang:

"Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
I met her on the mountain
There I took her life
Met her on the mountain
Stabbed her with my knife

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die

This time tomorrow
Reckon where I'll be
Hadn't a-been for Grayson
I'd a-been in Tennessee

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die

This time tomorrow
Reckon where I'll be
Down in some lonesome valley
Hangin' from a white oak tree

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die

Poor boy, you're bound to die
Poor boy you're bound to die
Poor boy, you're bound to die..."

"According to the story I heard, that song was written by Tom Dooley while he waited for his execution. The story goes that Tom Dooley had a wife, but fell in love with another woman. Together, he and his mistress conspired to kill his wife and run off together. As it turns out, he was right, he did hang. And the mistress it seems, went free.

"Okay, now it's your turn, if you want. You can sing a song, or just recite the lyrics. Then tell the background info if you know it. Or you can just tell the story that a song you know tells. Or if you want you can just sit there and look horrified. Oh, and next week's theme is Ghost stories."

[Up super early for I must hit the road. Massive SP as I'll be afk for a day or so. Wait for OCD is up please Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is awesome.]

Claire wasn't sure about the appropriateness of this song. But she knew it and it definitely told a story.

It was a rainy night when he came into sight
Standing by the road, no umbrella, no coat
So I pulled up along side and I offered him a ride
He accepted with a smile so we drove for a while
I didn't ask him his name, this lonely boy in the rain
Fate tell me it's right, is this love at first sight
Please don't make it wrong, just stay for the night
All I wanna do is make love to you
Say you will you want me too
All I wanna do is make love to you
I've got lovin' arms to hold on to

So we found this hotel, it was a place I knew well
We made magic that night. Oh, he did everything right
He brought the woman out of me, so many times, easily
And in the morning when he woke all I left him was a note
I told him I am the flower you are the seed
We walked in the garden we planted a tree
Don't try to find me, please don't you dare
Just live in my memory, you'll always be there

All I wanna do is make love to you
One night of love was all we knew

We made love
Love like strangers
All night long
We made love

Then it happened one day, we came round the same way
You can imagine his surprise when he saw his own eyes
I said please, please understand
I'm in love with another man
And what he couldn't give me
Was the one little thing that you can

One night of love was all we knew

[and WTF is that doing on a page of ROMANTIC love songs???]
