Arts & Crafts [Period 1, 6/1]

Sophie was burying her yawns in a cup of coffee as she greeted the class. "Good morning, I'm Sophie Devereaux. I'm substituting for Mr. Rogers this week; he had an out-of-town emergency. He's left me instructions on how you can all make lanyards, though, as well as key chains, if you prefer. Have fun with the beads and cords, and, well. I can't really answer any questions. I'm a fan of art, not an artist. Have at it!"

Angela nodded, smiling a little at that. Sounded like a nice relationship they had.

She looked at the colours she'd picked out. "Yeah, I think I won't be sending mine to my dad." She just couldn't see pink going with his image.

Sadly, it was more sort of Jennifer's current idealism than the actual realities of the situation.

Jennifer chuckled at Angela's comment. "He's not a big fan of pink?"

"I just don't see it suiting him," she said with a bit of a laugh of her own.

She smiled thoughtfully. Maybe give it to Hannibal... He'd hate the pink, but might keep it purely because she made it for him. You never knew.

"Pink is more my choice."

"Yeah, I don't think purple would be my dad's choice, either," Jennifer said. "I'm Jennifer, by the way."

"Angela," she told her in return. "Hi."

"And I'm sure if you give it to him, he'll like it anyway. Dad's are usually great like that."

"True," Jennifer said. "So, where are you from, Angela?" Small talk while doing the work seemed a great idea.

"Lately, DC," she replied easily, tying her ribbon together. "Ninety four." Because that helped around here. "You?

"LA," Jennifer said. "Seventy-two. But I'm getting better at things."

"You're new?" Angela guessed. "It'll get easier. I know, I had a pretty small gap compared to that, but... It did for me."

Jennifer nodded. "I'm not so worried, anymore. It just means I have to work extra hard, and I'm prepared to do that."

"I mean, at least you're not here from another planet, or something," she said as she threaded a bead onto her keychain.

That had to be worse.

"You know," Zack mused, lifting up his beaded squid by one eyebrow and looking it over thoughtfully, "I bet if I was trying to make a squid, it would have been a really pretty butterfly?"

He grinned faintly, and then shrugged.

"So. Do you like squid?"

"Yeah, that is a very good point," Jennifer said. "But so far, I really don't have any complaints. I really like it here."

"I was supposed to be staying for a summer... I've been here about a year now." Which kind of spoke for how much she liked it here.

Jennifer smiled. "That's a good sign. I don't know how long I'm supposed to be here."

"You didn't get any indication?" she asked. "Or, were you one of those who just kind of appeared without actually knowing you were coming?" she asked.

"My dad just sort of sent me here," Jennifer said. "With no real forewarning."

"As decoration or to eat?" Claudia asked.

"Either or," Zack laughed, setting the keychain on the desk and then grabbing it by another tentacle. It was totally creeping across the desk toward her, now.

He was easily amused.

"I hear squid are pretty versatile that way!"

"My parents tried to get me into eating dried squid as a snack food when I was a kid," Claudia said, "but I liked M&Ms better."

"You know, I've never actually heard of those?"

The boy had a pocket full of Pixy Stix. And now he was going to be educated about another kind of candy? The world as we know it probably didn't have long to live.

"But they already sound better than dried squid. Why would anyone dry it, anyhow?"

Oh Lord, as Claudia would say, if she could read narrative.

"I don't know why you'd dry it," she admitted. "It's a little like eating rubber bands, so I'll pass. Omigod you have to try M&Ms," she said, reaching into her enormous purse and pulling out a bag of M&Ms.

"Ooh, I'd love to, thanks!"

Abandon all hope, ye who enter here!

"I have a few Pixy Stix on me, if you'd like to trade!"

"I love Pixy Stix!" Claudia squealed. "They're such interesting colors!"

"They are!" Zack was bouncing now. And he hadn't even started on the sugar, yet. "I have a bunch of everything! What's your favorite?"

Because people totally ate the Pixy Stix for the flavors and not the immediate sugar high. Really.
