Rangering!, Friday, Period Five [ 05/29 ].

"I don't know if you noticed," said Minsc, addressing the class without his usual business-like (business-like for Minsc, anyway) manner, "but there are alligators! Shooting goldfish! We would all be horrible rangers indeed if all we did was sit on our butts and have a class while there were alligators shooting goldfish! So I shall make this quick, and then you are all to go out there and kick butt! I know that Boo and I will be!"

"So. Quick. As protectors of goodness, a ranger typically focuses a great deal of his energies into being very good at destroying one particular type of bad-doer, especially if they are common to marauding their homes! This allows you to ~~gain a bonus to your roll~~ strike them even better, though the careful study of what makes that creature tick...and stop ticking! We not only specialize on weapons, but also on enemies!"

"Here is a very nice list of common enemies favoured by rangers in my homeland of Faerûn! Look them over, pick one that you might be interested in choosing for your favoured enemy, and then spend the next week studying that enemy! Because that is the key! To know a bad guy is to know it's weaknesses and that is how a ranger ~~gets bonus rolls~~ fights them better! Research well! Whatever you pick, you will be going up against next week!"

"And, should there be a favoured enemy that you have already from your homework, you are welcome to pick one of those, too, especially if it will be more helpful to you in buttkicking later!"

"Now! Questions? No? Take a pick and get out of here! I want to hear about all the alligator butt you have kicked!"

[[ OCD ~~on the way~~ just so happens happens to have goldfish-shooting gators as its favoured enemy! Go fig. ]]

If Minsc seems particularly hyper and excitable today, it's because there're alligators shooting goldfish! Who wants class when there are alligators shooting goldfish?

. . . no, really, alligators shooting goldfish. Why were they in class again? Tahiri was kiiiiiiiiiiiiind of restless, yes.

Ben shot her an eager grin. Best date day ever!

Tahiri grinned back. Really, the fact that both of them thought the alligators were a bonus said something about their concept of dating. "Good thing he's letting us out early, huh?"

"A very good thing," Ben said with another smile. "So...alligator smiting and then food?"

They were so romantic.

"Dinner and a fight?" This prospect shouldn't make anyone grin like a dork, and yet there Tahiri was, doing just that. "You really know how to do these things right, don't you?"

The sad thing was that she wasn't being sarcastic.

"I ordered in the alligators just for you," he completely made up.

"Nice touch." Tahiri didn't believe him at all, of course, but she had to say it. "I think that might make you the best boyfriend ever."

"I've been working on it," Ben said modestly.

"Dork," Tahiri told him. "So, weapons locker and then town?"

"Perfect."

Pick your favoured enemy (either from the list or from your own homeworld) to study for next week, and ask questions if you have them, etc, etc.

Anemone looked over the list, finally settling on ghouls. For a variety of personal reasons, admittedly, but they seemed like something a good ranger would be happy to destroy.

You know, there was the obvious answer, except that the obvious answer meant fun conflicty times inside her head, so Tahiri went over the list and opted for giant spiders.

Look. That whole thing with the purella hadn't been fun.

Ben decided that he'd learn about the Empire of his father's day.

And not just because the officers from that time seemed to be making in-roads into the current new government.

Well, much.

Éowyn glanced over the list and frowned when she saw orcs listed. The description sounded similar to the creatures the men of Rohan fought, and she could see no reason to pick something else from the sheet.

Ichigo considered the ghouls for a moment, but they were quickly replaced by spectral undead as soon as he read about them.

Who might be there for a bit even if they should be fighting gators!

Prince Edward was here, but only for a moment as he was off to fight the gator beasts! And their spitting fishes!

But make it quick! There are gators!

This felt like bad timing, considering that the teacher seemed to want to jump out of the class right now. Ichigo didn't think it'd be a good idea to try and have this conversation a week late however and he needed to say something.

"Um, sir? Do you have a minute?"

"Ahhh..." Minsc drew in a breath, looking just about ready to say no when he realized that that wouldn't be very teacherly of him, so he let the breath out and said, "Yes," with great reluctance. He looked at the boy with a look that he tried to make seem like he was listening, when all it really did was continue to appear anxious. But really. There were gators. What could be more important than gators?

...Dragons, maybe. Dragons were definitely more important than gators, so if this boy was coming to him about dragons, this boy was his new best friend, but Minsc doubted it was dragons.

Ichigo recognised that look of impatience somewhere. "It won't take long," he promised quickly. "I'm Ichigo Kurosaki. I returned late for the semester and missed the first classes. I just wanted to introduce myself and ask for catch up work, but... I can drop by office hours when there aren't any alligators."

Pause.

"Shooting goldfish."

The shooting goldfish part was a very good distinction, so Minsc knew it was not just his impatience that made him feel that this Sir Ichigo fellow was a smart one and probably didn't have much to worry about on catching up...

...okay, no, it was probably the impatience.

"Ah-ha! Sir Ichigo! So this is what you look like! I was half thinking you were a thief with very good hide in shadows skills or maybe a ghost and that is why I could not see you! Are you saying this whole time is was simply that you were not there?"

Well, Ichigo could possible argue about the ghost thing. Only he didn't quite go about to tell people about that part of his life. He also wasn't sure why you'd try to to hide in a class even if you did have the skills. That seemed counter-productive.

"Yes, Sir. I was back home with my family," he explained. It still sounded like making excuses, but then he hadn't seen his sisters in a year so it was probably a good enough reason.

"Ah-ha! Family!" Minsc said. "Very good! The bonds we make with other people are very important! Just like the bonds we make by kicking things' butts! How about this, Sir Ichigo? Since all you have really missed is some weapons training and beating up of things, all you need to do to catch up is go out there and beat up some alligators. That sounds about fair."

Ichigo considered it and really, this teacher was making a lot of sense to him. "That sounds very fair, Sir. Thank you, Sir!"

"You're welcome, Sir Ichigo!" Minsc stated, brusquely and proudly. "Now what are you doing just standing there? Go forth and buttkick!"

Minsc was a big fan of experience teaching more than a classroom ever could, anyway.

"Yes, Sir!" It almost felt like he'd have to salute. He didn't.

He did however turn and head out, pondering if he should do this in Shinigami form or just get his hands dirty for real.

Minsc is way, way, way too excited.
