Storytelling, Fifth Period, Thursday 5/28

"Hey guys sorry I'm a little late." Tim said, arriving just after the students. "You know how it is, you're running late and the world conspires against you. My cell phone died, my alarm clock blew up. I swear, it blew up. I had to get the fire extinguisher to put out my curtains. Then when I was on the way here this mutant Teal Deer was blocking the path and wouldn't move. Sucker was as big as a horse. So I had to go around it, and got stuck in a pricker bush. The thorns were this long." He indicated a length about as long as his index finger. And they had hooks on the end. Never saw anything like it. Finally got free of that, with the stupid Deer laughing at me the whole time." He said all this with a perfectly straight face.

"None of that actually happened." he admitted. "Well that's not true, my cell phone did die, and I lost track of time. But it wound up helping me demonstrate today's theme. Tall Tales. A tall tale is generally when you take something that really happened, and exaggerated it to the Nth degree. This happens a lot with people and their accomplishments. John Henry, Paul Bunyon and Pecos Bill are good examples of that. ~~Though Paul Bunyon was made up as a corporate logo.~~ Sometimes they're called Fish Stories because people always like to exaggerate the size, strength and intelligence of the one that got away. They're not always used as excuses of course. Lots of times it's for bragging, or simply to make a good story.

"On a final note, in addition to telling a tall tale of your own, I want to open up a discussion. Have you ever actually exaggerated Fandom to the people at home? I know it's not neccesary, but still."

Listen, laugh, chat, scoff at Tim's lame excuse for being late.

The sad thing is, Jack thought it was all true. Not just because of Tim's delivery, but because...well, Fandom.

Tell a Tall Tale of your own, or answer Tim's question.

Gwynn shook her head. "No. In fact, I have been very careful to mention none of the weirdness of Fandom."

"Fraid they'll think you've lost it?"

"At the very least," she nodded. "That and my father and the king would demand that I leave."

"I'd say that's a very good reason to keep mum."

She gave him a beautiful smile. "I had that same thought."

Tim had to clear his throat to distract him from looking too much at that smile. He'd missed that smile.

Gwynn wasn't aware that she might be causing him distress, so she continued to smile.

"It's not always easy hiding things from them though."

"What if they came to visit? Would you try to hide it then?"

"I've been lucky in that they haven't been inclined to visit as of yet."

"Lack of curiosity or is the ol' sheriff keeping them too busy?"

She smiled again. "More like the fact that they are unaware that Fandom is willing to host visitors."

Tim snickered. "So your strategy is to not tell them about that either?"

She grinned at him. "Yep. No use stirring up the shit before I have to."

Someone had taught her a few 20th century sayings.

Tim blinked, and then laughed. "That phrase coming from your mouth sounds so weird."

She tilted her head. "Is it not a correct one? Eve has been teaching me phrases used a lot this century, but I do get confused."

"No it was fine. It's just...I guess I forgot just how long it's actually been."

"Two and a half years," she said helpfully.

"Not what he'd meant but he let it slide. "Hopefully it's not inapropriate to ask this, but would you like to hang out sometime not in class?"

She smiled at him. "I would enjoy that very much."

"Great! What's uh, what's your schedule like?"

Gwynn smiled. "I have classes Thursday and Friday mornings, and I work at The Gig on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The rest of my time is free."

"How about Sunday?"

She nodded. "I have no plans on Sunday."

"Great uh..." Where to go? "How about we meet at the playground?"

She nodded. "That works for me, Tim."

"Cool, I'll see you around noon?"

"Sounds perfect."

"my family back home already know about fandom's weirdness," Liz replied in response to the question, "so I haven't had to exaggerate it,"

"How'd they react?"

"Well, they're already used to weirdness, so they didn't find it all that unusual," she explained, "my guardian's a paranormal adviser, so he's used to seeing unusual things,"

"Oh really? Cool. Did he know about this place before he sent you?"

Liz nodded, "it was one of the reasons why he wanted me to finish my high school education here,"

"That's sort of why I came here at first."

He's approachable.

Up late and I'm sorry. I don't have nearly as good an excuse as Tim does. But look how nicely it worked out for the theme!
