My Life as a Buddy Movie | Period 2 | Wednesday | May 27

Loki had arrived early to class in order to shove all the desks and chairs to the side to give the room a nice, big empty space for today's lesson. Had he mentioned that he loved teaching sometimes? He fucking loved teaching sometimes.

Once everyone had arrived and was standing around, probably wondering what the hell was going on, Loki launched into the lecture.

"Good morning," he said, smiling sweetly. "Today, we're going to talk about one of the most important facets of working with another person. Communication. Basically, communication is the process of transferring information from one source to another. Pretty fucking broad, right? It could mean fucking anything that way and that's what makes it so fucking important. Now, the most common form of communication is talking, of course. It's the easiest and the one most people understand. But, it's not the only one. Let's say, I did this..."

He trailed off and, yes, stuck up his middle finger. It was effective and it was his style.

"That's communicating something, isn't? Hell yes it is. And I didn't even have to say a goddamn word. Communication can be verbal, nonverbal, or visual. When you work with someone, it's important to communicate with them. If you don't, you're basically going to be two people who are together but alone. It's not going to fucking work well. You're going to pull when the other person is pushing and you basically cancel each other the fuck out and that's just no good at all. It's not helpful. Have you ever tried to work with another person and you don't talk, you don't email or anything like that? Does shit get done? Does it get done well? Do you have any fucking idea what your partner's thinking? Probably not. You might think you do but, unless we've got some mindreaders in this place, you're probably wrong and that's going to be made glaringly obvious at some point."

Even if it might be fun to trip someone up sometimes by not communicating.

"They key to good communication is clarity, I think. You have to express your thoughts and feelings and ideas to the other person clearly. Don't tell them something muddled and expect them to know what the fuck you're thinking. Be clear. Explain it if you have. And, sometimes, communication is going to turn into an argument. That doesn't mean you did anything wrong. That leads well into next week's lesson, in fact but that's next week. If you work with someone long enough, communication becomes a lot fucking easier. You're attuned to the other person and you could probably predict what they're going to say before they say it. But that takes time, practice and patience."

Loki took a breath and smiled at the group.

"So, we've got two activities for today. First, I want everyone to practice their nonverbal communication skills on me. Write something down, glare at me, something and I'll try and see if you've communicated effectively by guessing what you're trying to say. And then, we're doing three legged races. You find a partner and ties your legs together. Then, it's up to you and your partner to get from one end of this classroom to the other without falling down, breaking the tie or punching each other. Communicate effectively and it will be fucking easy. Don't and it's not going to be fun at all."

And he'd probably laugh.

With that, Loki leaned back against the wall and waited for the class to get started.

The wet was making it feel earlier than it was and Griff was nursing on a rather large coffee while he tried to pay attention to whatever it was Loki wanted them to do today.

Effy moved somewhere towards the edge of the room, giving herself at least a desk to lean on, while she listened to this lecture.

Desks were for soft modern people, or something. Gabrielle was just fine standing, thanks.

Until she started fidgeting.

And edging toward something she could lean on.

Shh.

Maron just sorta bounced on her feet as she listened. It wasn't like class was all that long or anything, and it was kinda nice to stand after sitting all last period.

Fiona listened to the lecture, but it wasn't anything she didn't know. She smiled as she thought of her game with Eliot.

Leaning. It's what walls were for, and what Jon was doing.

Griff screwed up his face and held his nose.

That should be clear.
endsthegame: (not impressed)

Ender didn't make a face, or write anything, or do anything at all. Instead, he was studiously looking at the empty notepad in front of him, disinterested.

Gwen glared. Gwen was good at glaring, she'd had a lot of practice.

Two years of staying quiet, and Effy liked to think she was pretty good at the non-verbal thing.

She considered the challenge a moment, and made a dirty gesture not at all unlike her icon, and smirked. She was sure it communicated something.

Honestly, she was just curious if she could get away with that sort of thing in class.

Gabrielle narrowed her eyes slightly, set her lips in a thin line, and scowled in what one might almost call the Poteidaia Bitchface.

It was actually a very versatile look and came in handy in a surprising number of situations.

Hey, hey, Amber's easy as pie. Who wouldn't want to live with her?

'Course there would be random visits from her ma and Loretta...

Whatever. She was around. And so you know, totally expect her to laugh her ass off at the racing.

Yeah, Effy is... maybe the less easy as pie to live with. Ahem.

But she's managed not to try strangling her current roommate yet, gotta give her something for that!

She was about, and looking about as approachable as she ever looked.

This time placed on his desk? A box of chocolate glazed donuts. Two were missing. And of course a large cup of coffee.

And then there was the oblivious counter to the absolutely disprovable stuff, presenting to Loki a box (http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/tofu_rice_bento.html) after class. "I made you a bento," she said.

And about fifty million others that were going to the teachers' lounge, but he was the only one who got a personal delivery.
