Flight & Flying [Tuesday, May 26, 4th period]

The flight shed, when the students entered, would be eating food-off-the-floor levels of spotless and still smell faintly of bleach.

And Anakin would be a barely contained bundle of rage. "Today," he spat, flinging his hand toward the simulator, "we work with the F-16 Flying Falcon, one of the aircraft used by the militaries of this world. It's adequate in air-to-air combat as well as air-to-surface attack, can go more than 850 kilometers before it needs to be refueled and can withstand up to nine G's--pretty high tech for this world's standards."

He opened the simulator door--carefully, despite his obvious rage--and gestured to the controls. "As you can see, it's configured differently than the systems we've been using in the last few weeks, but the joystick and the trigger button are fairly self-explanatory. You'll also be dealing with the Earth's gravity, so if you make the plane go up too quickly, the machine's been equipped to simulate G forces, so you'll pass out or throw up. If you throw up, you and Sheppard will be cleaning that up," he growled.

He clapped his hands together. "Begin! Sheppard, get in the Force-bedamned sim."

Ben sat down in the cockpit seat, pulled on the silly helmet, glanced around, frowned and then tapped the microphone on. "Okay, so how do I make this thing go?" he asked.

No. No, Tahiri hadn't woken up naked in this room.

She did look awfully nervous when she climbed (yes, there was scrambling, hush) into the cockpit and stared at the instrument panel.

"I can do this, right?" She studied the panel a little more intently and wished her voice didn't sound so shaky. "Right. Yeah. Okay."

She hoped.

Jon doesn't need the explanation and is practically bouncing in place as he climbs in the cockpit. He had the helmet on in a matter of two seconds and was starting up the sim.

"Do I get extra points if I shoot down Sheppard?" Because he would have so much fun doing it.

Rose slid into the sim, her fingers sliding over the completely unfamiliar controls for a moment before she put the helmet on. "How do I do this now?" she asked. More politely than she might have if the teacher didn't seem all kinds of pissed about something.

Firekeeper had not woken up naked in this room, no. Blind Seer, however, was currently naked and in this room. But he was a wolf, so naked was pretty much his default state and thus hopefully forgivable.

Climbing in to the cockpit, the joystick at least was recognizable, but the rest? Even if everything happened to be helpfully labeled, that didn't help much when one couldn't read. "How to start?" Firekeeper called out.

Jack had very little idea of what he was doing, but he was generally a quick study. He pulled on the helmet then traced his fingertips over the contours of the controls.

"What should I do first?"

For as far as Anemone had come in dealing with her conditioning, being around someone she thought of as a commanding officer who was clearly Not Happy was kicking the ingrained imperative to be submissive into high gear.

Fighting it was giving her a headache, and Anemone grit her teeth as she slid into the seat. "What's the plane's G force limit?" she asked tersely, running her fingers over the controls. She could handle G forces better than her classmates, but that didn't mean the plane could.

Zayne took a seat in the cockpit and put the helmet on. And then, because he had no clue, he asked, "What now?"

After getting used to the way the plane worked in the practice run, Ben was feeling pretty confident about trying to get close to Anakin's numbers on the air to surface run.

It was only after he came within inches of clipping his wing against the mountain range while trying to hit the fourth target that he realized just how good his grandfather was.

Damn, that was annoying to realize.

Ben hit all five targets and didn't explode. He clocked in a time of 9 minutes flat.

The first few minutes of Tahiri's run were pretty shaky, practice run notwithstanding, but she was starting to get the hang of this whole flying thing (at least if she relied on the Force to help her out, since she wasn't under any illusions that her skills on their own would get her through this), and she wasn't even trying to beat anyone's time.

She had to make several passes to take out the first few targets, but 16 minutes and 43.5 seconds later she'd made it through the run, and wasn't even flying too badly by the end of it. She'd never call it flashy, but it was actually decent except for a few choppy bits.

Hey. That was even better than she'd been hoping for, and she couldn't help being a little pleased with herself when she climbed back out of the sim.

This was nearly the same as the sims that the Air Force used, and Jon was use to those. They were more fun to do in a 302 though.

He didn't crash and did it less than ten minutes. He probably could have done it faster, but it was having too much fun doing barrel rolls and loops.

Rose was grinning like crazy after the practice run, and she was more than ready to try something more challenging.

Like not throwing up. After she took the first turn way too tightly and almost blacked out from the G forces, Rose had to readjust her estimation of what she could handle.

But between a sense of recklessness and her own very good reflexes, she made it through the course in 19.5 minutes, hitting all the but the smallest target.

Thankfully, Firekeeper did not get airsick as easily as she got seasick. She managed to make the run-through in just over 20 minutes, feeling only mildly queasy by the time she finished. Not too bad, she felt, for someone who'd only known flying machines existed for a handful of months now.

Anemone came in around the nine minute mark, looking like the cat that ate the canary.

Some of the rather large craters she'd left in her wake were the reason for her good mood. There was just something very satisfying about property damage.

Zayne actually managed not to crash, but only because he was taking it as slowly as possible.

Zayne was happy to finish up unscathed in nearly 22 minutes.

After running through the dogfighting scenario, Tahiri was sort of sprawled out in a corner of the flight shed (mmm, lingering bleach fumes), trying to catch her breath. And get those stupid boots off, thank you very much. And get her heart rate back to normal.

Look, she needed recovery time, okay?
