"Good afternoon, class!" Minsc, of course, seemed in the most excitable of spirits as the class came into the Danger Shop this week, the setting looking an awful lot like the clearing they were in last week, but with an assortment of long-range weapons rather than . "Today, we talk about one of the most essential parts of being a good ranger, and that is...of course!....buttkicking! But, more specifically, it is buttkicking was a proficiency in certain weapons. Now, I noticed last week that many of you are already very proficient in swords and the like, but what a ranger really needs is an equal proficiency in a range weapons. They are range-ers, after all!"

"So here we have a collection of different range weapons. Some of you mentioned being trained with guns and lasers, pew pew, but rangering is an older art, so we will use older weapons! We've got bows, crossbows, some very nice slings, and darts." And, yes, those last ones were big giant lawn darts; Minsc had messed up a little with the Danger Shop programming.

"I would not be surprised if some of you already have a proficiency in one of these long-range weapons already. If so, try one you're not as familiar with. Or, instead of just going for the targets, I can put you in a real battle with a beastie form the programming, and what you can do there is work on being able to fight an enemy who, unlike the targets, won't just stay put, so you'll have to work on potentially switching in and out between weapons for a more efficient kill!"

"Off to the side, there are also practise swords and staffs. If you are done with target practise, it is good to keep up your other work, and you may choose to spar with each other! I actually encourage this, as no ranger should get rusty! Well, then! Have at it! And if there are any questions, please just ask! TO ARMS!"

Find target practise a little droll? Minsc has designated an area for more intrepid adventurers to come and fight "live" targets of beasties that they can shoot at and then fight!

Please note that these beasties might be a little Slow-Played. (Glitches in the system, right?).

After a few more shots of target practice, Arthur had wandered over here, yes. Not that he felt any need to shoot anything. At all. Really.

Okay, his denial was failing.

Minsc was not at all surprised to see that Sir Arthur would rise to the chance to strike down a beastie! He also knew that the boy would be quite formidable at it, so not only was Arthur getting a gnoll (because any day watching a gnoll get royally tromped was a good day!), he was getting two.

They were milling about for a moment before one lifted his muzzle into the air and sniffed. He nudged the other and then pointed out Arthur's direction. They let out a snarling conversation before regaining a good grip on their halberds and rushing across the significant space between them toward the human.

... Well. For something as relatively slow-release as a crossbow, this was going to be daunting. This may have been why Arthur had barely even fired a bolt (at one rushing gnoll's head, mind) before discarding the weapon and drawing his sword. Short-range? Yes. More effective? Yes.

Fun?

Oh, hell yes.

And it was why Minsc preferred a bow.

And deeply envied the specialized quick-release crossbow that the Spawn of Bhaal had looted in one of their adventures. Now there was a weapon to make a man drool. Especially since it was wielded by a woman like that Spawn of Bhaal.

Random exposition aside, however, the gnoll ~~rolled a saving throw~~ managed to deflect the bolt with a very good move of his halberd. It clinked against the axehead, and he let out a rolling snarl before continuing the chaaaarge!

Arthur would have been very interested in a quick-release crossbow. Possibly even drooling, yes. ... Definitely drooling. And maybe other things. ~~Bloody saving throws.~~

Swords, then. He gave his the usual twirl (it was in the Pendragon genetics. You could tell) as he braced himself, striking high at the first gnoll upon impact. Arrival. Whichever.

Elspeth gave up on the strange giant darts and selected a bow and quiver of arrows, then went over to try the "live" targets.

The ground around Lady Elspeth might have shaken a little, especially once the umberhulk stepped out of shadows. He didn't make any battle cry, just beat his chest a moment before starting toward the girl, his limbs creaking like branches in the wind, making a surprisingly quick for its size path for the enemy.

Elspeth loosed an arrow at its chest.

Thunk! The arrow seemed to sink its tip into the umberhulk's chest.

The umberhulk, however, didn't seem to notice much, beyond letting out a slightly surprised sound, reaching over to snap the arrow so that it wasn't sticking out of him anymore, and kept charging forward.

Well that wasn't good. Elspeth dropped her bow and drew her sword. She stepped up to meet it as it advanced and slashed at its legs, hoping to bring it down.

The only problem with an umberhulk once it started moving was that it had trouble stopping after that.

So the umberhulk wasn't looking so much like it would actually hit Eslpeth as it looked like it was just going to try plowing right through the smaller being.

Elspeth dove to the side, rolled, and came up to swing at the back of the creature's knees (or nearest equivalent), hoping to sever a tendon.

It was a very good maneuver, and a very good swing at that. It took a lot to stop an umberhulk once it started moving, but a good shot to the back of the knee did the trick nicely. It didn't severe a tendon; an umberhulk was built of pretty tough stuff, but it did cause his knee to give way and he sunk down, almost a tripping, and failed to stop itself from falling further. The ground shook a little as it thunked to the ground; and then it started trying to dig into the ground. If it burrowed, it could try to get Elspeth from underneath. Unless she stopped it first; it was going to take a while to make any process.

Elspeth swung the sword down on the back of its neck.

Well, that would certain start to do it. A very strange, clearly inhuman sound wriggled out of the massive bug at the hit, and it tried to dig away a little faster.

Elspeth attempted to put one foot on its back and swing her sword at its neck again.
