Fashion! Releasing Your Inner Superhero, etc. [Thursday, May 21, 1st period]

"Today we will begin the most important part of your costumes!" Edna announced as she wheeled in a hanging rack full of spandex body suits. Oh, you lucky people, you. (Don't ask how that last one snuck in there. It had been a Very Terrible Costume Concept.) "Measurements!"

She ignored any horrified looks or attempts to hide under tables. "Ms. Davis, my assistant," she nodded at Brooke, "and I will be measuring you so that the costumes you create for yourselves will fit! While you are waiting, come up with two preliminary concepts for your ensemble--include your logo from last week on one of them--and then ask a fellow student to critique!"

She made shooing motions. "Go! Scatter! Create!" She pointed at one student at random. "Except you. You get to wear Spandex first, darling."

Dinah perched her chin on her hand, not wanting to push on the subject, but thinking Merlin had been right about the shy, a bit. "Is the rest of your family around?" she asked, trying to keep her voice mild.

"Um. No. My mother got really sick before I was born, and passed away right after I arrived. My... my father passed away in an accident. I was an only child." Shilo doesn't look up at all while speaking.

Dinah watched her draw, and said, "Me too. I got adopted last year, so I have sisters now. But yeah, no parents." She was quiet a moment and said, "I'm sorry about that."

"It's okay," Shilo murmured. "I'm just... getting used to it. Being here has helped, though."

"Yeah? That's good." Dinah thought that maybe more distraction was called for, and pulled out the necklace with her logo on it. "This is the one I'm going to use. I didn't come up with it, my sister did, but it's close enough to what I want."

Shilo looked up to see the necklace. "Wow, that's nice. Your sister didn't mind you borrowing it for the class?"

"Nope. She designed some earrings that go with it, too," Dinah said, smiling and fastening it around her neck. Since they were also comms that cost more than a Ferrari, she was being extra-careful with it. "Although I don't think she anticipated that I'd get a superhero name like Tweety."

Shilo laughed a little. "Yeah, Miss Mode was a bit... awful about people's names."

"I can't believe she stuck Claudia with War Crimes. What kind of superhero could carry that off?" Dinah marveled, keeping her voice down.

"Yeah, Claudia told me about that. It seems more like a villain's name," Shilo replied.

If nothing else, Shilo enjoyed this class because she could socialize with other students and not feel guilty about potentially missing information from the teacher.

"Maybe people become supervillains because they've got rotten names," Dinah said speculatively, starting to add fishnets to one of her costume drawings. "Crawler. Freeze. The Scream. That would turn anyone to crime."

Shilo giggled. "So it's not so much a hatred of their fellow man, but bad PR, that causes people to be criminal masterminds?"

"I've known a few that'd try that defense," Dinah said dryly, thinking of the Chameleon and a couple others. "Oh, woe, woe is meeee, I'm doomed to beee, your enemyyyyy," she made up on the spot, singing it.

Shilo put her hands over her mouth to trap the giggles.

"You have a lovely singing voice," she finally managed to say, still laughing.

Dinah grinned at her. "Thank you!" She gave a mini-bow from her seat, and leaned forward on her elbows. "I love music. No training, but it's fun. What's your favorites?"

"Opera," Shilo admitted. "And rock music. How about you?"

"Mostly rock, and some alternative. My friend Alice works at Groovy Tunes on Wednesdays, and so does Hurley. It's got a great selection, if you want to pick up some new stuff," Dinah said. "Opera, wow. It doesn't all sound alike to you? I think it always being Italian or French or whatever throws me."

"I know both of them," Shilo said with a smile. "And it really depends on the singer. There was a great singer at the Genetic Opera called Blind Mag."

"Genetic Opera. Where was that?" Dinah asked, adding a swooshy coat to one of her designs just for the heck of it. "That's kind of a cool stage name."

"Um. The future." Shilo started debating what her mask should look like. "I don't think she really liked it. Mag was born blind, and then got the chance to be able to see. But it came at a price."

Dinah frowned, wariness creeping into her expression. "I'm thinking this isn't one a health insurance company would cover, hunh?"

Shilo let out a quiet, bitter laugh. "There was no health insurance." She looked up at Dinah, her expression dark. "There was only GeneCo."

She looked away. "Mag's eyes came at the cost of her freedom. She had to sing for the Genetic Opera, or face repossession."

Dinah swallowed down nausea. As bad a dystopia as she'd heard of yet. "I'm sorry to hear that." She was quiet a second, then tentatively asked, "Did everyone know this? No one could do anything about it?"

"Oh, yes, everyone knew. Repossessions were a fact of life," Shilo replied, sounding oddly bitter about the topic. "You were ninety days late, the Repo Man found you and took back GeneCo's property. The fact that Mag's contract with the Genetic Opera had the stipulation of her losing her eyes if she ever left was just more content for the pages of the gossip magazines."

"Ugh," Dinah said fervently. She paused, and then said carefully, "I'm glad you're here now, even more. That kind of world sounds too risky to stick with, if you've got a choice."
