Storytelling, Fifth Period, Thursday 5/20
Once more Tim met the students at the campfire.
"Hey guys, I hope you had a good week. And for you new kids, I hope you're settling in alright. Anyone get bitten by a Gremlin?" Besides me?
"Last week, I said that this week the theme would be a story from our own lives. These can take any form really. Lots of times people like to tell about funny or strange things that happened to them. Sometimes they brag about things they've done. Or complain about horrible things they've had to endure.
For example," he settled himself more firmly onto the log he was sitting on, "Last year, I went to hell."
"When people immigrated to this country, they brought their culture, and their languages, and their beliefs with them. But they soon found out that those beliefs could get them laughed at. Even persecuted. So gradually, the people who came to this land learned to stop believing in their Faeries, or Banniks, or Goblins or Boggarts. In some cases, even gods.
"All those creatures really existed though. But when people stopped believing in them, they were shunted into another world. This world was not pleasant. Now part of this was the place itself but it was also because of the neighbors. All the magical, and supernatural creatures were suddenly shoved into close proximity. Fairies, sprites, monsters, and Gods. When a tiny hole appeared in the wall between this world and Earth, the Fairies and sprites escaped. They stretched the hole, allowing the monsters to get out.
"And they stretched the hole even more. The Fae were escaping the Monsters. The Monsters were escaping the Gods. The Gods? They just wanted to have a good time. Unfortunately Loki and Set's idea of a good time was to destroy the world.
"When the Fae escaped it became my job to help them. That wound up including having to stop Loki from bringing about Ragnarok. But how do you stop a God? Well, not by charging in guns blazing that's for sure. Loki took me, and all of my friends, and threw them into the underworld.
"We managed to find each other, and travel through the various realms. Hades, Mictlan, Osiris' Realm, until finally there was only one level of the Underworld between us and the land of the living. Hell."
At this Tim got quiet, and spoke reluctantly. He hadn't even seen the true business end of the place. And still he didn't like to remember it. "I only saw a very little part of it. It...read Dante's inferno for the whole story. It's not totally accurate, but it's close enough."
"I guess the weirdest part was actually that we convinced the legions of Hell to help stop the end of the world."
Maybe he should have chosen a different story.
"Next week we'll focus on Tall Tales."
