Flight & Flying [Tuesday, May 19, 4th period]

Anakin was almost smiling today as the class met in the Danger Shop. Creepy.

"Today we're going to continue with land-based transportation," he said quietly, pointing to two motorcycle-esque machines hovering on either side him. "This is a swoop bike," he said, pointing to one, "and the one on the left is a speeder bike, the slightly newer model, which is also equipped with a laser cannon. Don't use the laser cannon, please. Both fly like the motorcycles of your world drive, but can get up to 400 kilometers an hour. That being said, you will be wearing helmets and there are two different scenarios based on your level of skill. One is a city planet with very tall buildings to miss. The second is a forest moon with trees hundreds of meters tall."

He gave the class a tight smile. "Please don't hit a tree or a building and explode. There will be mocking. If you do it intentionally, there will be detention."

He clapped his hands. "Begin."

Rose looked from Ben to Master Skywalker again, disbelief evident on her face. "No freakin' way."

"Pretty much exactly what he said," Ben said with a smile. "His son is significantly older than he is, back in my world."

"That's officially the weirdest thing I've heard here," Rose told him with a quick grin. "But you probabaly get that a lot."

"I really do," Ben agreed. "Our family reaches new heights in weirdness. That's a version of my grandfather, who is significantly younger than he should be," also, alive, "a cousin of mine is around here who's supposed to be fifteen years older than I am and isn't, and a version of my dad who graduated two years ago."

If it wasn't for the timing oddities, Ben's story would sound significantly like the royals at St. Vladimir's.

"So what's it like being a-" Rose had to stop to consider - "third generation student?"

"Strange," Ben said. "Other students have stories about my family that I don't know. I'm used to knowing the family history by heart. So there aren't any random relatives of yours running around?"

Rose's eyes widened at the thought. "I hope not! I can't picture my mother - well, do you know anyone here named Hathaway?" She asked. "Because I really, really hope not."

Ben thought about it, then shook his head. "No, I think you're okay."

"Good," she said, more relieved than she'd admit. "I don't want to see my mother without a headstart."

"She's that bad?" Ben asked.

"Nah," Rose admitted. "Just very dedicated and not so approving." She made a face at Ben. "But you're the one with all the family here so I shouldn't complain."

Ben smiled. "Wait until you spend more time with my grandfather. That description fits him very well, too. Did your mother send you here?"

"She doesn't know," Rose said, sharing a rueful look for the parental type. "She sent me to St Vlad's - it's a boarding school - when I was four. They sent me here." After technically expelling her. "Did you come because of your family?"

"I didn't know they were here when I came," Ben admitted. "It was a bit of an adjustment."

"Here's your grandpa teaching classes and your cousin and oh hey, your dad was here?" Rose said. "I can't even imagine." She smiled teasingly. "Good to see you survived." Her conversation with Blysse yesterday suddenly came to mind and she asked "and you're all 'Jedi', right? What's that about? I heard it was magic without being evil."

"We're more like diplomatic soldiers with superpowers," Ben said with a tiny smile. "The reason we're drawn to flying is that we have heightened reflexes. There are two other Jedi in this class that I'm not related to."

Heightened reflexes was something Rose understood. "Fighting diplomats with superpowers?" She asked curiously. It only made sense for the reflexes to be put to good use.

"Lately, we've been more focused on fighting, but the war's over, so we're getting to be diplomats again," Ben said with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "We can tell when someone's lying, which comes in handy during treaty negotiations."

For a moment, Ben reminded her of Belikov or some of the older Guardians. Which was weird when he was younger even than her.

She nodded. "I'm sorry about the war," she said. "Did you -" she had no idea what to say and hated that. "Were you sent here because of it?"

He nodded, then added, "Though I went back and forth to help out. I'm trained and I couldn't just stand by and watch."

Even though he was fourteen. Ben's universe was a little screwed up.

"Of course not," Rose said instantly. She impulsively reached to touch the back of his hand. "No one could. Is it weird being here now?"

Her intense concern for her charge and the weirdness Rose felt being without her might have bled through in the question.

Ben flinched a little when she touched him. "A little weird," he said, pretending like he hadn't. "But it's better for me to be here than for my father to be worrying about me when he has more important matters to deal with."

She nodded, pulling her hand back quickly and pretending not to notice his flinch like it seemed he wanted. "Fair enough," she agreed.

It wasn't often that she was that sensitive to people not Lissa, but she looked for the change of subject to get away from something that seemed uncomfortable to him. "So you're probably really good at this flying thing, huh? Part of those reflexes?"

He grinned, grateful for a change in subject. "It runs in the family. Granddad has set the record on every simulation for speed and accuracy we'll ever run."

Privately he wondered if Anakin only picked ones that he'd been good at.

"I'm good, but not as good as he is. And I think my dad would give him a run for his credits. We start flying almost as soon as we can reach the controls."

"So why is it you're taking the class again?" She teased. "Easy A?"
