Civil War Re-Enactment; Monday, Period Three [ 05/18 ].
It was looking to be a nice day in Maryland, so the class was meeting in the Danger Shop, which probably worked out, since now they had a fort.
"Morning," he greeted the class, "and welcome to Fort Sumter. We're just a little ways away from Charleston, North Carolina, and this is where the American Civil War got its official start. The date? April 12, 1861. Abraham Lincoln was elected president last year, prompting South Carolina to secede from the United States and, by February of 1861, six other states have followed South Carolina's example, and they got together, wrote up a Constitution as even seceded American love to do, and became the Confederate States of America with a capitol in Montgomery, Alabama. 'Honest Abe' was inaugurated in March, with a call to 'legally void' all sececions but a promise not to invade the Confederacy. This was all while Northern state governors were buffing up their armaments and militias, by the way. Either way, the South sent delegates offering to pay for federal property and start up a peace treaty, but Lincoln refused to recognize them as a legitimate government.
"So they were off to a great start.
"Fort Sumter was pretty unimportant on a military level, so it's more of a symbol, as well as the start of the war. Feeling that having the Union in possession of the fort weakened the Confederacy, President Jefferson Davis sent General P. G. T. Beauregard over in the morning to fire shots, after a so-far failed attempt to cut off supplies and inspire Major Robert Anderson and his troops to evacuate.
"The battle lasted about thirty-four hours, but due to low ammo, high placed cannons, and fleets being unable to harbor, there were actually no casualties in his first battle. Not until the 100-gun salute afterwards, anyway, where a pile of cartridges blew up , killing one soldier instantly and heavily wounding the rest of the gun squad. And those were the first casualties of this war, ladies and gentlemen, a good sign of how ridiculous it was sometimes. When the central flagpole of the court had fallen, it prompted Confederate soldiers to wonder if it had fallen in surrender. Whether or not it did, Anderson agreed to a truce, a surrender was made, and the fort handed over.
"The following day, Lincoln declared war on the Confederate States of America." Jasper paused for a slightly self-satisfied smirk. "So much for not being a legitimate government, huh?
"Now, for today, clearly, we don't have an army. But we do have our Union and our Confederacy, and we're going to 're-enact' Sumter with a slightly different goal. Find your jackets, get your prop guns, bayonets, and swords, and get ready. Union, you'll be defending the fort. Confederacy, you'll be trying to get in and knock down the flag pole, or at least get the flag on it. So, we're pretty much playing glorified, vaguely historically based capture the flag in a big fort.
"So, if there aren't any questions, we'll start. And look over the first battle of Bull Run for next week. And, sorry to say, but we're going to skip that whole part afterward with everything burning. This time, anyway."
