Civil War Re-Enactment; Monday, Period Three [ 05/11 ].

For the first class, they would be meeting in a classroom, which helped make Jasper feel at least a little more comfortable. The shades were drawn on any windows, just to be sure, and he was going to be busy, at first, boggling over the fact that anyone had actually signed up for this class. Emmett he could excuse, obviously, but seriously? Oh, this would be interesting...

Here was to hoping none of these kids were clumsy.

"Welcome," he said once the class had collected and was that a frog? He shook his head and went on. "To Civil War Re-enactment. I'm your teacher for the semester, Mr. Hale." He shot Emmett a don't laugh look, not really expect it to work much. "Hopefully, you're aware that the American Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, is an very important period of American history. Taking place between the years of 1861 and 1865, it was a short war, but it was a bloody one, and it dealt with a lot of hot-button issues. Eleven states of the South seceded from the Northern states; the former became known as the Confederacy, the latter the Union. The most evident subject that caused the war was that of slavery: the Southern economy depended heavily on the use of slave labor, while the Northern states had a firmer grip on industry and believed that slavery should be abolished. But things are, of course, more complicated than that, and it was a delicate mix of many factors, including also state autonomy and the expansion into the West."

"Clearly, all this is important. But it's a big thing to cover in just seven weeks, and the point of the class is a very time honored American tradition of re-enacting the epic and pivotal battles of the Civil War. It's exactly how it sounds. Re-enacting battles. Here is your syllabus that outlines each of the battles we will be covering. The week before, I'll have information on the battle we'll be re-enacting, for you to look over and consider how to put it into action. You think about the stradegy. You put yourself in the position of the soldiers. You pretend to fight and see how it goes. Pretend is the keyword here. These are pretendy fun time games, as you will. Let's try not to actually hurt anyone, hm? Fort Sumter was the official start of the war, and that's what we'll do next week. I'll go into more detail of how then. Today?"

Jasper turned a smile, albeit nervous, on the class, wondering if they realized he was babbling because he was nervous. "Casting. There are quite a few iconic Civil War generals, like those on this list, that may be pivotal in some battles. Take a look, and pick out which general you'll be for the run of the semester. If you're not sure, there are also these handy quizzes to help. If anyone wants to be the same generals? We'll figure something out."

"Oh, and I guess we should introduce ourselves a bit, shouldn't we? Let's go around and do that first. You can start."

Go around the class and tell us a little about yourself.

"My name is Joan Girardi," she said. "I just finished my junior year. I'm on Student Council and the Cheerleading squad. And I'm from Maryland."

Jasper nodded. Easy enough; she seemed fairly normal. Maybe being a cheerleader might also mean she wasn't clumsy at all, too. "Nice to meet you, Miss Girardi. Welcome to the class."

"I'm Sookie Stackhouse," she said softly, smiling lightly. "I just finished my sophomore year, and I'm from Bon Temps Louisiana, near Shreveport. Oh, and it's 1999 at home."

Jasper couldn't help at least a little at the girl's introduction. Of course a Southern girl. And the detail about the time difference was interesting; had to be one of those 'weird things' Emmett had mentioned. "Miss Stackhouse," he nodded, "nice to meet you. Welcome to the class."

"I'm Hugo Reyes," he introduced. "But like, everyone calls me Hurley. I just finished my junior year, I'm from Santa Monica California, and I work at Groovy Tunes and Covent Garden Flowers."

"A record store and a garden shop, Mister Reyes?" Jasper asked, lightly joking and trying to generally put out a feeling of calm for the class, more for himself than anything. It was a small group of kids, but, man, it felt like a lot. "That's quite a range."

"Well, yeah. They were good jobs, you know? Beats working at a Mr. Cluck's, like I'd be doing now if I'd gone home for the summer," Hurley said.

"I'm Penelope Wilhern," she began, quietly, "and I'm from England. I just finished my junior year and I work Wednesday evening's at Caritas."

"England," Jasper noted, slightly amused. A Southern girl could be expected in a class like this; an English one, however, could be rather interesting. And he had to admit he was a little curious about the nose, but he sensed a bit of timidity in the girl, and tried to make her feel comfortable. "So you'll have an outsider's view of the war, Miss Wilhern. Do you know much about the War between the States?"

She peeked at Professor Hale, before looking back down. "I'm sorry, but I do not. The Civil War was not part of my history lessons other than the mere mentioning of it." Did he wonder why she was in his class? "It is my wish to correct that by taking this course."

"My name is Jill McTeague, I just finished my junior year, and I'm from Massachusetts. And uh. If a guy shows up one week, answers to Jack? That's me. Sorry about him. He's kind of a jerk."

Okay, that...stopped Jasper a bit, and his head tilted, uncertain if he got that right. "I'm sorry, Miss McTeague, did you say that he's...you?"

"Yes, sir," Jill said. "I know, it's really weird. I have no explanation. It just is."

Emmett felt this part was a little useless but went with it anyway since he wanted to make sure Jasper had a good first day before he started giving him headaches.

"Well I'm Emmett Cullen and I'm from Forks, Washington at the moment. And I'm not really into this history thing but I figured I'd take the class since the teacher seems cool," he said. "Even if he does suck at Halo."

Okay, maybe he'd start giving headaches now.

"What Mr. Cullen here seems to forget," Jasper taunted, grinning a little and grateful for the chance to relax, "is that some of us are just better at games a little more complex than button mashing and point-and-shoot."

"I... am Worf. Son of Mogh. I am a Klingon. We are a warrior race from a planet alien to yours."

Well, Emmett did say weird. It was becoming a mantra.

And here he thought he'd be getting an outsider perspective with Miss Wilhern...

"Very good, then, Mr. Worf; do you know much about the American Civil War?"

"It is required reading for the academy I wish to attend," Worf replied. "So, yes. I do."

"I'm Hinata Hyuuga," she said, trying not to stutter. "I've just finished my sophomore year. My world isn't much like t-this one at all, and I work at Book Haven on Tuesdays."

Wow, this one almost made Jasper feel like his nerves were nonexistent. He nodding, giving the girl a small smile and trying to make her feel more relaxed and comfortable. "Welcome to the class, Miss Hyuuga. What is your world like, if you don't mind me asking?"

And if she didn't mind his private boggling over saying something like that.

She flushed slightly. "Ino-san says it's something l-like Feudal Japan with television and radio," Hinata explained. "I don't know much of what Feudal Japan is l-like though, so I can't say how accurate that is."

"Hi, I'm Robin, yes, I'm a talking frog. That's not unusual where I come from. And I'm on the cheerleading squad."

A talking cheerleading frog. In a Civil War Re-enactment class. Great.

Jasper glanced toward Emmett to see if his brother was dead of laughing yet.

"Good to have you in the class, Mr. Robin," Jasper said, astonished with his ability to actually do so with a straight face.

"Thank you Mr. Hale. This class sounds like a lot of fun."
