Keeping Your Advantage: Terrain and You, Week I [Monday, Period 4]

Ghanima was sitting on her desk, absently eating lemon drops as she watched the students wander into the room. Once the last of them had arrived, her face lit up with a smile.

"Well now," she said, her voice carrying effortlessly. "Most of you look rather familiar!"

Ghanima was not sure if it was a mark of approval in her choice in subject matter, or if her students were simply masochists.

She was not ruling out either option.

"For those of you that are new, I am Lady Ghanima Atreides, and this is Terrain and You. If you have not had one of my classes before, you may call me Lady Ghanima, Miss Ghanima, or Miss Atreides, whichever you are more comfortable with. The first person to call me Lady Atreides gets detention," Ghanima announced, smiling. "Lady Atreides is my grandmother, and I will not answer to it."

"This is a class intended to give you a basic grounding in the varying types of terrain you may encounter." Ghanima hopped off her desk to wander along the rows of desks. "The simple fact that you are at this school is testimony to the fact that you never know where you may find yourself."

"From cityscapes to icebergs, each week we will look at a different type of terrain, and one thing you can do to make your life easier. Please be aware that there is no syllabus to this class, because I don't want you to have time to prepare for each scenario. Many times you will have to work with only the things you have on you during an emergency, and learning to keep your wits about you is important."

"First, however, I'd like you all to introduce yourselves. Name, rank, how long you've been at Fandom, and type of terrain you are most familiar with. If anyone is interested in a TA position, see me after class."

"You. Start."

"Yes, why not?" Leto saw no reason to question that choice.

"You're a prince or whatever, I thought you'd know all that already," Dinah said, blinking. "Or is it just for fun?"

"The specifics varies from culture to culture and knowing the rules of etiquette can be quite helpful." He smiled at her. "Do you disagree?"

"I guess?" She tilted her head at him, face on the verge of a giggle. "If only so you can break them on purpose, and not by accident?"

"Precisely. And please tell me what's so funny."

Dinah wasn't even sure why, then realized, "It's just funny, the way you like to find out things to mess with them." She grinned a little. "It's fun to watch from over here."

He glanced at Ghani, lowering his voice. "She might tell you I don't need encouragement," he smirked. "So, what have I done to amuse you so far?"

"Messing with Arthur, although maybe you oughta pull back on that," Dinah said, smirking back. "He didn't know you could super-speed? I told him in the salle this morning. You can imagine his response. And, hmmm." She gave him a narrower smile, but was still amused. "Messing with my head, I guess."

"I have never meant to hurt you," he said quietly, meeting her eyes. Her comment about what she had told Arthur left him thoughtful for a few moments. Given the current situation, it might not have been the best that could happen. "He called it magic?"

"I know," Dinah said, her voice quieter. "And that helps. You're just you, is all." She rolled her eyes at his other question. "Yes. I told him he could learn it, but then again, it's not like he'd ever believe that first, so maybe he couldn't. Not a happy prince guy."

Sometimes he wished Dinah would learn when not to talk. But it wasn't her fault; she hadn't known. "Arthur and I are not quite on speaking terms at the moment," Leto told her.

Dinah winced. "Sorry?" She'd known it was an oops at the time, but not how much. "Maybe being in the cabins is a good thing. Except there's the Reserve tomorrow."

"It is not your fault," he said. "And yes, that is one reason I'm looking forward to the cabins. Tomorrow... we'll see."
