Mad Kings & Queens, Final [Monday, Period 4]

When the class arrived today, they'd find the desks missing. Instead, there were cushions on the floor surrounding a number of low tables, and each table held one of two boxes.

"I'm going to assume that most of you are completely unable to focus on anything remotely academic today," Ghanima stated. "So today we're going to do a practical application."

"There is always a cost to removing a corrupt monarch from power," she continued. "People. Resources. There's not even a guarantee that you'll win."

"Each of you is a revolutionary trying to save their people. The person opposite you is a corrupt or insane ruler, that must be deposed." Ghanima held up one pawn, smiling. "It's up to each of you to decide where to draw the line for acceptable loss. Each army you lose is a point off your grade, unless you win it all."

"Welcome to your final. Pair up, or make teams, and have fun."

[Last verse, same as the first. Wait for the OCD! OCD up! Show her what you've learned!]

Savannah knew from experience that she didn't have the patience for Chess, so she was at a table with a game of Risk.

"Bring it on, kiddo," Eve said cheerfully, dropping into the seat across from her daughter.

Dejarik wasn't Tahiri's game (if anything else, she knew that from that last trip out to Borleias on the Falcon, thanks, Threepio), so she figured it stood to reason that chess wouldn't be, either.

She'd be over here with a Risk table, thanks.

Liir looked over at one of the people at a Risk table and waved.

"May I join you?"

"Hey, Liir," Tahiri said, looking up. "Sure, come on over."

"Thank you," he was sure to tell her as he took his seat.

"Have you played this before?"
weetuskenraider: (Contemplative)

"Not this, specifically," Tahiri said, picking up one of the pieces and rolling it between her fingers. "Something similar, though."

Which wasn't to say she was particularly great at it. Just her luck for having had a best friend who loved games like this, really.

"Ah. It'll be new for me, then," he admitted. "I hope that's all right."

"Completely fine," Tahiri assured him. "I'm not great at this anyway and my player's knowledge of Risk extends as far as what Eddie Izzard has to say about it."

"It should at least be fun, yes?" he asked, mostly as encouragement.

Ben had spent a lot of time playing Dejarik on long interstellar flights. He set up the chess board with a tiny smile on his face.

Zayne wasn't terribly familiar with either game (Lucien, shockingly, wasn't big on letting his student play board games), but he at least knew how Dejarik was played and this looked close enough.

So when he walked up to Ben, he didn't know what he was getting himself into on a few levels. "Looking for a partner?"
momslilassassin: (Ben: I can smirk too)

Ben gave him a slightly evil smile. "Please."

"Just checking, have you ever played this before?" Zayne asked as he took his seat.
momslilassassin: (Ben: grin)

"I play Dejarik," Ben said. "This can't be that different."

Re: Activity: Risk or Chess!

[identity profile] cataclysmicluck.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Same here. Except that I only played Dejarik once when I was little. So you'll probably have an advantage on me," Zayne said.
momslilassassin: (Ben: hello down there)

Ben's smile was decidedly un-Jedilike. "My uncle has a set aboard his ship," he said, setting up the board. "I've played," fairly constantly, "a few times."
raspberryturk: (Hmm.)

Reno looked at the Risk board. And then he looked at chess. And then he looked at the Risk board. And then he looked at chess.

He had no clue how to play either. So he decided to go with Risk in the vain hope that all the different colors would prove distracting enough to a potential opponent that maybe he'd have time to grab the game board and all the pieces, and then make a run for it.

Hey, nowhere did Ghanima say he had to play by the rules.

Merlin peered over his shoulder at the boards as well. "Chess?" That one, at least, he was familiar with. If only by proxy.

"Chess?" Reno's echo was more than slightly on the baffled side. "I guess I can't be no worse at that than I am at, say, controllin' my own alcohol intake," he mused. "How do you play the game?"

Re: Activity: Risk or Chess!

[identity profile] bigdamndestiny.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
That only earned him a look. "I had noticed," Merlin said dryly. "I-- you move the pieces."

That much he'd gathered!
raspberryturk: (Reno knows better)

Re: Activity: Risk or Chess!

[personal profile] raspberryturk 2009-04-21 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Really? Movin' the pieces? Sounds like that requires thinkin', or effort or somethin'," Reno snorted, leaning over the chessboard and looking at the pieces as though perhaps trying to stare them down. "What's the different between, like, the ones with a crown, and them pony-lookin' ones?"

This was going to be a stellar game of chess, wasn't it?

[identity profile] bigdamndestiny.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Merlin... did not know. "Maybe we ought to try the other one? Then we can feign ignorance if we don't do it well."

"Or we could try an' make the both of 'em work together. The pieces on the checkerboard there look more interestin', but that Risk game's got a kinda kickass map, yo."
