Thaumaturgy 101 - First Period - 4/16

As her students walked in, Abigail Irene looked frazzled for the first time ever.

"I am very sorry about last week, everyone. Please rest assured, it will not happen again."

Though she almost seemed to be... blushing?

"I am glad to know, however, that my chosen teaching assistants covered the class and admirably from all accounts." If they were there, Sam and Savannah were given a warm, appreciative, smile.

"Today, however, I'd like to start with the lesson, which will be short, and open up the rest of the class to question or discussion, considering."

She leaned back, ran a hand over her hair to straighten it a little, and settled herself to begin.

"Tools are a magician's best friend. As we've covered previously, a great deal of magic goes on between your ears and there is nothing like a tool to focus a mind. They're also exceedingly useful when you need something done and quickly. A prepared tool can save you vital minutes in the worst of times and hours of frustration in the best of times."

She pointed back to the blue carpetbag that sat beside the desk.

"My tools are contained within and you will notice that I am never without that bag. Within is all I would need to work an investigation for the Crown as well as a few other nicities preprepared in case of trouble.

"While I could discuss a few tools with you, I'm well aware that magic is a little different in each of the places you're all from and I'd hate to misinform you about such things. Instead, I'd like to give you three practical lessons about tools:

"One: always try, if at all possible, to make your tools yourself. A tool bought or prepared by another is not nearly as responsive and useful as one you've fashioned on your own. Not only will the tool be exactly what you wanted, but the process of creating the tool will give you a depth of knowledge and appreciation that shopping in a store simply cannot compare to.

"Two: when choosing tools, especially when it comes to tools that you would be bringing around with you, consider which tools can be used for more than one purpose. My wand, as some of you might have seen, holds the ability to freeze objects in time and space, but I can also utilize it for more traditional wand work. A white candle is much more useful than a colored one as white can be substituted for any working. A cone of incense only requires something to sit on, but a stick requires a holder as well and has much more chance of leaving behind a mess. Choose your tools wisely and you'll never find yourself without what you need."

"Three: never skimp on the supplies for your tools. Which isn't to say that you should make yourself a pauper to make or purchase them, only that your tools are worth a reasonable expense. And the skimping is not restricted just to money: you should take time and invest yourself in their making. Putting together a shoddy piece of work will produce shoddy work."

She breathed in.

"And now that you've heard me ramble on, questions?"
