Library [Thursday, April 16]

Claudia was in a fantastic mood as she opened the library today. The Art Crawl yesterday had been a huge success! She plucked at her copper, burnt orange, red-orange and burnt sienna plaid mini skirt (over teal leggings, of course), then adjusted the hang of her chartreuse shirt and pepto-pink jacket before touching her black beret to make sure it was correctly perched on top of her hair. On anyone else, it would look like an escape attempt of the unpopular crayons had been caught and turned into fabric. On Claudia it looked great.

But even she might be pushing it with the macaroni and cheese necklace.

She sat down at the desk and pulled out her sketchpad and began drawing her latest still life: this time about Reese's Cups.

Mmm.

Miss Bennet hesitated in the doorway, somewhat sheepishly. Her distractions still did not forgive the grave trespass of etiquette she had made.

"Hello?" she called uncertainly, wondering if the strangely-dressed girl was the librarian on duty, and if so, if she was feeling quite all right. "May I interrupt you for a moment?"

"I ... did not wish to alarm you," Miss Bennet said carefully, quite confused as to why the girl was now hiding her sketchpad underneath herself. Perhaps it was connected to the ... eccentric choice of dress?

She should be kind, she reminded herself; she herself had been a victim of a gremlin bite recently, so she should, similarly, have pity for whatever affliction from which this girl was suffering. "Pray accept my apologies for startling you. My name is Miss Elizabeth Bennet. I teach literature here, at the school."

"I thank you," Miss Bennet said, offering the girl a quick curtsy, and wondering if this dress was louder than she had realized when she selected it. She dismissed the thoughts quickly and smiled. "I was hoping to teach a class here, third period, but I neglected to ask if that was acceptable, either to you or the head librarian. Would you mind the imposition?"

Miss Bennet could not help flushing at that. A proper educator might have told her sternly that such forms of address were disrespectful, but Lizzy couldn't bring herself to say something so hypocritical. Professors Durden and Algren were quite handsome.

Instead, she cleared her throat slightly. "I shall hope we don't cross paths, then. May I refer my students to you, should they require assistance?"

"Anything at all," Miss Bennet admitted, with a mischievous smile. "I want them to learn how to write research papers, so I'm allowing them to select a topic. So long as it's properly documented and cited, the topic is entirely of their own choosing."

"I have hand-outs," Miss Bennet said. "Though I worry that providing them might seem limiting, as though I'm suggesting they may only use the topics on that list."
