Journalism: Thursday, Period 4, Class 13

Jonah waited for the bell today. He didn't want to be interrupted as he was hitting his stride. "Every once in a while, you're going to find that for whatever reason, you have to kill a story. Even after you put in a lot of work, even after you've exhausted your resources, even after you've written the damn thing, your editor will come up to you and tell you that he's not going to run it, write something else, now get out of his office! Or something could come up to make you decide that now is not the time to run with it."

"I don't particularly want to read about zombies this week, so I'm killing your stories just like how SOMEBODY in this class tried to kill me last week! Instead, write something about the big news story this week: gremlin bites! Analysis, recapping who's been what, a quickie interview with a gremlin-bit person, whatever you want. But if anyone writes about my experience on Tuesday, then they get a detention! It's my class, and I get to control the content of the articles so there's no use complaining if you get a detention for that. Oh, and your deadline hasn't changed even though you have to write something different because of my whims. It's due by the end of the class period! Get to work!"

React to having the zombie article junked, for better or for worse.

Feel free to pass notes or whatever. Jonah doesn't care today. You're just taking away from time you could be spending doing your work and that's going to be reflected in your grade. And Jonah will laugh at that.

But... Buffy actually did the work! And oh yeah, she'd also chopped off her teacher's appendages so maybe she'd just try to hide behind her hair here.

Claire hadn't really done that much work on the zombie article -- hi, not a crazy person, not going out when zombies are running around -- so she didn't actually care.

Anemone had actually written a half-way decent article about the zombies, so she was sulking slightly. Being a member of the undead for two days totally counted as undercover investigative journalism.

Rikku was going to eyeroll. Just not too obviously, or else she might get detention, and this week was prom and all.

Luckily, she had completely forgotten she was supposed to write an article about the zombies, so there wasn't too much work wasted or anything.

But... Amber had actually done a paper on the zombies, as much as she hated it. Whatever, she sat quietly and doodled in her notebook. She did not need detention this weekend.

The Gremlin bites were more fun to write about anyway. Not so much scary, as funny.

Start writing, question your classmates, run out of the classroom to interview someone else very quickly, or goof off and let that be reflected in your grade.

Claire was just daring anyone to try to interview her. Really.

Anemone started writing about her previous class. History had given her more than enough material to work with.

Amber started writing about yesterday's work experience. Being gremlin bit made a huge difference when you were stocking shelves. Wasn't much research she needed for that.

Annja wasn't too upset about the zombie article being junked. She had too many issues about it anyway.

Blair did what she could to get her work done. Being obsessed with being the best did that to a girl.

Gremlins are going chompy chompy. Write about it! Or handwave it! Or specifically not turn it in! Or turn in your zombie article and get a 0 for it.

Remember, if you write about Jonah's turn as Ringo, you get detention. No arguments.

Anemone turned in an article about how the adults of the school had a responsibility to their students not to be under the effect of psychedelic substances during class hours, and that included this so-called 'Gremlin Venom'.

There were some speculations about why some people tended to be affected more than others, an examination of the types of manifestations, and a theory about a school board cover-up of a wider epidemic.

Mostly-fact. Ish. Factish. And some lurid gossip for flavor. Anemone thought it was pretty darn good for such a short deadline.

Rikku was going to write a retrospective on past gremlin bites that had been seriously awesome. The words Und Tiger were abused pretty heavily.

Amber turned in her article, writing about how being a drunk, a smoker, and constantly in lust, affected her working enviroment negatively due to the infectious bite of a gremlin. And thank god she wasn't Loretta in real life. She'd have a lot of explaining to do...

...and so on and so forth.

Probably too much information, but it all pertained to being gremlin bitten, so she thought it honest and well written especially given the short amount of time to do it.

Annja had plenty to write about this week and ended up writing a long and detailed article about a wonderful performance that two students had put on in the dorms on Tuesday night.

She included links to photos on the web.

Who maybe won't be quite so argumentative this week, Little Miss "Ooh, Let's Protect People From Zombies Instead of Learning How To Be a Journalist."

Rikku was going to set his coffee down on his desk with a huff. Yup. She brought it. That was totally coffee. See?

"You seem chipper today," Jonah noted.

"Very," she said sharply. "I brought your coffee. Deal."

(It would help if I pinged back to this when I actually GOT it, wouldn't it? *facepalm*)

Just not about certain subjects.

So, write about him being Ringo? Detention. Pester him about his turn as a zombie? Probable detention (I'll check with you first). Whine too much about having your work junked? Possible detention.

Lots of ways to earn a detention if you want this week!

Paddlin' in the school canoe?

Oh, you better believe that's a paddlin'. I mean, detention.
