Leadership: Wednesday, Period 1, Class 13 (4/8/09)
"Welcome back," Nathan said as they all filed in. "It's good to see that you all made it. If we have time at the end of class perhaps those of you who took leadership roles over the weekend can talk about what it was like.
"First, we have today's lesson."
Nathan moved to start writing notes on the board. "Some systems of government believe in trying to keep leaders from having ultimate power. In the United States we call this system checks and balances. The goal is - "
Nathan was interrupted by the classroom door swinging open. Peter walked in. He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that Nathan had just started. "Good. I'm not too late."
"Something wrong?" Nathan asked Peter.
"What?" Peter raked his hands through his hair. "Oh, no. No zombies or anything like that. I'm here to help you with this class."
"Help me," Nathan repeated, to make sure he and Peter were using those words to mean the same thing. "With - "
"Teaching." Peter came up to the front of the room and perched on Nathan's desk. He waved to the other students in the classroom. "I'm here to help with the lesson."
"You've been bitten by a gremlin," Nathan decided.
Peter rolled his eyes. "I have not! Not again anyway. No, this is the balance class, right?"
"How would you know?" Nathan asked.
"I read your syllabus," Peter said, as though that should've been obvious.
"Have you ever read the syllabus for your own classes?"
"I don't like those teachers as much as I like you." Peter batted his eyes at Nathan in an obnoxious little brother sort of way.
Nathan refused to show his annoyance. Really he did. Ignore the tightening of his jaw. "Pete, some of us are trying to work."
"But you're doing the wrong thing." Peter gestured at Nathan's notes on the board. "Checks and balances? That's nice and all but that's not what people need to learn."
"What do you, in all of your seventeen years of experience, think they need to learn then?" Nathan asked.
"Emotional balance," Peter said. He addressed the class more than Nathan. "Look, plans and goals are good, but they ignore the heart. It can be really easy for someone to get so caught up in fixing problems and making things happen that they forget about why they do what they do. Which is why people who want to lead should make sure to keep people around them who aren't afraid to remind you how to care, to be human - if that's what your species happens to be."
"Can we talk about how some people can get so caught up in feeling they forget to turn their brains on once in a while?" Nathan asked, looking at Peter pointedly.
"People who feel need balance too," Peter admitted. He gave Nathan a wry smile. "Sometimes we need people who think too much to have our backs when we can't figure out a solution. But that's the point. It's all about balance. Both types help the other."
"And can really annoy one another," Nathan said.
"I love you too, Nate," Peter told him.
Nathan rolled his eyes, but he rubbed Peter's back affectionately. "Okay - balance. Let's talk about it. Are you a thinker - "
" - or a feeler," Peter added.
" - and how do you keep that balance in what you do?" Nathan finished. He paused, then said, "I'll also give extra credit to anybody who can tell me what my brother turned into this weekend."
"Oh you suck."
"Benefits of being older, Pete."

She briefly thought of her own brothers back at home in Kyoto. It had been a long time since she'd talked to them.
