Journalism: Thursday, Period 4, Class 12

For once, Jonah didn't say a word until the bell rang. And even then he paused and looked at his students for a moment.

"Well?" he finally said. "THERE ARE ZOMBIES INVADING THE ISLAND! WRITE ABOUT IT! I expect a full page article from everyone next week detailing a story of Fandom in the throes of an invasion of the undead! Now, start writing, start preparing questions to ask zombie survivors or maybe the zombies themselves!"

Not that there's much lecture today, but you can take very brief notes or - if you can't wait two seconds for Jonah to stop talking - talk.

Buffy immediately raised her hand. "Can I be excused? I have some zombies to fi- I mean, talk to. A ton of questions already, I'm raring to go."

She wasn't so much undercover as she didn't think Jonah would let her go if she just said she was going to kill the things they were supposed to interview.

"Yes, go! Two things to remember, though: One, bring somebody - doesn't have to be from this class - with you as backup while you're writing things down. Just because you're going to interview zombies doesn't mean you have to be stupid about it. Second, if the person with you gets eaten by zombies, run and get somebody else to help you before you go try to talk to any other zombies."

...Awesome, it worked.

"Got it!" she said, jumping up from her seat. "Bye!"

Toby was kinda freaked out here. Zombies totes explained the ugly hobos he'd passed on his way home the day before, though.

Blair was totally staring. She'd hoped that the reports of zombies had been a bad April Fool's.

Warren seemed more than just a little uncertain about the assignment today as he listened to the lecture.

But then again, he'd sooner play reporter than superhero in a situation like this. And if his mom asked, he was just working on practising his secret identity. Really.

Dear lord. Zombies. Couldn't people just die in peace anymore?

Robin would totally not be trying to talk to any Zombies. If he didn't have rehearsal tonight he'd have just planned to hide under his bed until it was over.

Talk about zombies (or other things), get started preparing for your article, just start writing, whatever suits your mood. Including, I suppose, non-vombie stuff.

He's absolutely ready to answer questions on how to report on crazy crap like this.

Rikku was here, and alive, and somewhat distracted. "Shouldn't we be out killing the zombies?" she asked. "Seems way more productive, is all."

"I'm here to teach you how to be a journalist, not how to be a monster fighter," Jonah said. "You can focus on that second thing next hour, but for now you're an observer and recorder of the news."

Rikku folded her arms. "Then people might die," she snapped. "Can't I go kill the monsters and then record whatever I observed?"

"Nope! Nobody's leaving my class to risk death," Jonah said. Except for Buffy. But she lied about it. "Anyway, it's not like there aren't enough other people around here willing to pick up the slack for you for an hour."

"That's not the point!" Rikku huffed, clearly lacking any sense of self-preservation. "I'm a Guardian. I'm supposed to protect people, not sit around writing about it!"

"No, during this hour, you're a teacher's assistant, so that's exactly what you're supposed to do!" Jonah said. "If you don't like it, I can make sure you spend a Saturday in detention instead of protecting people!"

I usually have "[Class X]" in my subject lines. But I had a brainfart and did the date instead. I blame this on getting class together before 7 AM for once.

Even though he's ABOUT TO BE EATEN.
