Flight Club [Flight Shed]

With food and snacks set out, Gavin was back by the flight shed, waiting for the rest of the club to show up. And, while he was waiting, he was eating some of the snacks. Food was food and teenage boy were unable to resist food.

"Hey guys, welcome back," he greeted, nodding to everyone. "Hope you all had fun with your paper airplanes because we're doing that again."

Pause.

"No, kidding. I wouldn't keep you out of the flight sim for two weeks in a row. Today, we're going to do something a little different. Instead of small fighter crafts, you're going to be the captain of a large ship. You will have control of several fighters, a horde of weapons and a cadre of soldiers. The scenario will be...revealed to you in the sim. Have fun."

Gavin smiled and opened the flight sim's door.

"Maybe," Ben agreed, giving her a very tiny smile.

Maybe didn't mean yes. "You okay?"

Maybe didn't mean yes, but she'd take it over an outright no right now.

"Better now that you're back," Tahiri told him, which . . . didn't necessarily mean she was okay either. But she figured this wasn't her place to complain right now, all things considered.

"That doesn't mean you're okay," Ben pointed out. It was easier to worry about something else: he was already very tired of his own issues.

"I didn't get eaten by zombies on Monday?" Tahiri offered, because that was so helpful.

Ben frowned. "You went to Caritas?"

"What does that have to do with --" Tahiri blinked. This was still awkward, but at least they were talking, right? "No, the gun club field trip on Monday kind of . . . didn't go according to plan."

"There were non-band member zombies?" he asked, stepping closer. Give him a mission and he could shove everything else aside. He tapped his forehead, then raised his eyebrows, a silent question about Riina.

Tahiri knew exactly what he meant, and bit her lip again as she nodded, looking embarrassed.

He didn't know if he could handle touching her, and he knew that lowering his shields would blast her with more information that she wanted.

"No need to be embarrassed," he said softly, silently berating himself for not being able to do more.

"Wasn't my best moment, that's all." Tahiri managed a tiny smile. "I hate getting like that."

His fingers came within inches of brushing against hers before he flinched and pulled back.

"You were under stress," he said soothingly.

There was confusion and a tiny flash of hurt in the look Tahiri gave him at the flinch. "I know. But it wasn't fun. And then I came home and got your message, and one from Firekeeper saying she's gone off for a couple of weeks."

"She's gone too?" Ben looked disappointed.

"No explanation. Just that she went away and she's coming back. You know how she is." Tahiri, being stubborn, hadn't quite given up on trying to see if she could pick up anything at all off of Ben right now, despite the complete lack of success.

Ben's walls were ridiculous. He could be stubborn, too, and had a vested interest in making sure she couldn't see how he really was.

"Not big on the chatting," Ben agreed. "Sorry I missed her."

That, of course, was only making Tahiri even more curious. And worried. And okay, a little hurt. But, she reminded herself, now wasn't the best time for this.

"She'll probably be sorry she missed you too," she said a bit uncomfortably.

He caught his lower lip between his teeth. "I missed you too," he finally managed.

Since Force knew the Tahiri at home wasn't this one.

It was kind of surprising how much of a relief that was. "Good to know, hero boy," Tahiri said with a soft laugh.

"Not much of a hero," he demurred.

"Says you. I think otherwise," Tahiri countered. She could be really, really unobjective sometimes.

He tugged his cloak around himself and shook his head. "I just do my job."

His body language was really kind of worrisome, but for the time being Tahiri was going to chalk that up to the flight shed being a somewhat public place and Ben not being the most demonstrative of people.

She looked at him thoughtfully and gave him an affectionate smile. "I like that about you."

Ben twitched just a little.

Tahiri didn't mean to stare at him, really. "Uh, Ben?"

"Hmm?" he replied, trying to be natural.
