Blank Page Art Club, Monday, 3/30

After pinning some sample works to the blackboard, Claire put the usual array of paints, chalk, pencils, paper and crayons (and a few cheap cameras) on the supplies table, then sat down to wait for the club to show up.

Once everyone seemed to be there, she said, "Hey. I think today feels like a day for portraits. You can sketch yourself, or pair up and draw each other, or do some group triad thing, whatever works. Try to make it more than I think we're in good shape on Art Crawl, but let me know if you have questions about your part or if you wanna sign up for more work. Anything else?"

That relief was a little weird, honestly, but Claire knew some people were just all camera shy. She didn't give it much more thought just then, as she was quickly distracted by trying to think of a pose. "Don't know," she said, looking around. "I could just sit on the table and try to hold still, maybe keep my camera in my lap so it's kind of looking at you when you're looking at the picture."

"Interesting concept." The corner of Katchoo's mouth twitched, just barely, into a not-quite-smirk. "Kind of like an artistic whaddya call it, Moebius strip."

"Or like when there are mirrors facing each other and you just get reflected forever," Claire agreed, hopping up and settling into her pose. "And I know I said no shooting your face, but I can I get that thing you just did with your mouth? It was cool."

Of course, by asking she had probably ruined it, and she knew it.

"Yeah, kind of like that." Katchoo paused midway through bringing her pencil up to the sketchbook. "I did a thing with my mouth?"

Nobody had almost smiled here, really, nothing to see, move along . . .

"Like a smile but not a smile," Claire said, moving her hand slightly. "A smirk kind of thing. Like this." She tried to imitate it, with some success.

It was the imitation that got Katchoo to smirk ever so slightly again, really. "Yeah," she said, starting to sketch quickly, "I don't really do smiling."

"How come?" Claire asked, quickly snapping a frame of just Katina's jaw, the bottom of her hair, her hand at work. Probably a so-so angle, but it might work. "Or is it just kind of a life is tragic thing?"

Katchoo grimaced at that, and quickly got a few more lines down on the page to capture Claire's pose. "That's kind of melodramatic, isn't it? Nah, I just . . . what the hell's the point of faking, you know?"

Claire had been trying for sarcasm and had failed; she shrugged a little. "None, but everybody just fucking does it all the time."

"I hate that," Katchoo muttered, more to herself than to Claire, but audibly enough. "It's a huge frikkin' joke."

The basic lines of her sketch were down now, and she started to work on details: shoes, hair, clothes.

"Even here," Claire said, taking a photo of one of Katchoo's shoes for no reason except shoes were cool. "Here, with every kind of freak in the world, you still have the rich kids who think they're cool, and the artsy kids, and I bet if we had sports we'd have jocks. It's all a bunch of clich&e;s."

"God, tell me about it." Katchoo snorted and added some texture to her pencil rendering of Claire's hair. "Weird-ass place like this, and some things about high school still don't change."
