Leadership: Wednesday, Period 1, Class 11 (3/25/09)

"We've discussed how we can't make everyone happy," Nathan said. "Now let's discuss one of the reasons why. As leaders sometimes it is impossible for us to help everyone. We may want to, but we may lack the manpower, funds, or ability. We do the best we can, but that's just it: the best we can. Not the best there is.

"It's therefore necessary to prepare yourself for this. This is where your foundation of goals and values comes in. It will help you figure out what to do when none of the options available to you are pleasant ones."

Nathan handed out the class exercise. "Break up into your groups and talk about how you would handle this situation. There are no right or wrong answers, but there is no option where you can wave a wand and make everything okay.

"Here are your groups:

Group 1:
Hoshi Sato
Lee Adama
Peyton Sawyer
Dahlia Mancini

Group 2:
Myn Donos
Inara Serra
Zayne Carrick
Yurika Dōjima

Group 3:
Annja Creed
Tahiri Veila
Ichigo Kurosaki
Naomi Wildman
Yasutora Sado

"I'm here if you have any questions," Nathan said.

Tahiri was paying close attention today, and looked like she was giving serious thought to the concept.

Which she was, actually, yes, and scribbling down a lot of notes.

Lee bypassed notes again just to listen. Notes wouldn't help in these type of situations anyway. Every situation would be different so a process wouldn't likely help.

Zayne looked concerned at the thought of deciding who lived and who died, even in a hypothetical situation. He tried to distract himself by taking notes, but it wasn't working.

Lee was looking over his handout while waiting for the rest of his group.

"This sucks," Peyton said quietly.

"I agree," said Hoshi. "I really hope I never have to do this for real."

Before even meeting up with the group, Zayne was already trying to figure out how to make this work without losing a single person. He was sure that the Force could give him some help in the hypothetical situation, but he felt like that would be cheating the exercise.

Dōjima looked at her group and sighed.

"Alberta, Jack, Paul, Don," she said briskly. "Too much work, not enough return. If we didn't potentially need the baby, I'd trade Nancy for Alberta, but two high-strung women is too many."

Zayne wasn't sure if he was impressed or horrified. "You came up with the answer that fast?"

Re: Group 2

[identity profile] dojima-hime.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
"We don't need that many feel-good people," Dōjima pointed out. "Alberta and Jack have their uses, yes, but that's offset by the conflict they'd cause. The other two don't have anything to offer besides problems."

She was a Dōjima and a Hunter. Ruthless efficiency was expected, not just encouraged.

"But they're still people," Zayne said. Zayne was probably the most kind-hearted Jedi Padawan you were ever likely to meet. "At the very least, they deserve a little more consideration than that, don't they?"

Re: Group 2

[identity profile] dojima-hime.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Normally? Yes," she agreed. "In this situation? No. My consideration has to be for the survival of as many people as possible, and pick the people best suited to help others once the radiation is safe-ish."

"Besides, that's only four. We still need to get rid of at least one more."

Re: Group 2

[identity profile] cataclysmicluck.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
"People can survive on very little food and water for a couple weeks," Zayne said. "If Jack is kept around to possibly work on the efficiency of the oxygen system, maybe we don't 'need to get rid of' anyone else."

Re: Group 2

"Jack has proved he's already untrustworthy," Dōjima replied, "and a pregnant woman is going to need to eat a lot if we want that baby alive and healthy."

Making these decisions was exactly why Tahiri was happy to not be in a position of leadership, but she supposed she'd end up there eventually. She was chewing on her lower lip as she looked over the handout.

Ichigo raised an eyebrow at the handout and placed it back down on the table, not even bothering to look over the list. "I wouldn't remove anyone. I'd step out myself and ask whoever is willing to do the same also," he said.

"I agree," Naomi said quietly, she knew that in Starfleet you had to be prepared to face these kind of scenarios, "If I was in this position, I wouldn't hesitate to remove myself first,"
