Leadership: Wednesday, Period 1, Class 9 (3/11/09)

"Today we're talking about diplomacy," Nathan said as he passed around the related handouts. "As a leader you're going to have to deal with people who don't like you very much. Some say that's a good sign that you're doing your job." Nathan flashed a grin at his students.

"Diplomacy is the talent that allows you to get what you want without the other person feeling badly about it. Read through the handout, then we're going to work on the class exercise.

"I want you to pair up. One of you wants help moving. The other doesn't want to do it. Use the listed skills of tact, body language, and diplomatic suggestion to see which one of you gets what you want without the other person resenting you.

"I'm here if you have any questions."

Listen, take notes, talk amongst yourselves, look out the window at OMGHARPIES.

Lee spent half his time reading the handout and half his time glancing warily out the window. Freaking bird...things.

She tried to listen and take notes, she really did. This lesson, after all, could be highly useful and relevant to her future. But then there were winged women flying past the window and occasional shrieking, and that was extremely distracting.

At least she'd have the handouts to study later.

. . . um, yeah. Flying things outside. Sorry, Professor Petrelli -- Tahiri was going to have a hard time paying attention to the lecture today.

Zayne was doing his best to both take notes and watch the harpies.

And that's why every word was misspelled in his datapad entry for today's lecture.

Find a diplomatic way to get what you want.

Lee could be diplomatic. He'd learned from the best. Or the worst. Well, he'd learned so he was waiting to try that out.

"Hey. Do you want to be the mover or the movee?" Zayne asked.

"Let's go with mover," Lee said, shrugging. "I'll give it a shot."

"In that case, I should let you know that I'm busy that day," Zayne said.

"The whole day?" Lee asked. "Come on, half a day and I'll buy you lunch."

"Well, not the whole day, but by the time we're done moving, I'll be too tired to do what I need to do," Zayne countered.

"What do you need to do?" Lee asked. "Maybe I could help you later on."

"It's personal," Zayne said, like that was a good excuse.

Lee stuck out his lower lip and tried to look like a sad excuse for a man. "Please?"

"... What would we be getting for lunch?" Zayne asked.

The fact that he was a helpful guy made this half of the assignment tough for him.

"Whatever you'd like," he said, still using the same hangdog expression in hopes that it'd work.

"Okay, fine," Zayne said, feeling that he caved way too early.

He wasn't very good at saying no.

"That was easy," Lee said triumphantly. "If I ever need to move, I'm finding you."

"I'll hide," Zayne said. "It'll be easier than saying no."

"You would wanna say no to a friendly request?" he asked. "That's kind of harsh."

"To be fair, I probably won't hide very well," Zayne joked.

"You're not very good at this avoiding helping someone thing," Lee remarked with a laugh.

"I think it's because I usually try to be helpful. It's hard to break old habits," Zayne said.

Diplomacy might be more difficult than she was expecting - Inara realized that she wasn't used to making sure she got what she wanted when she negotiated.

Still, she'd try her best, if she could ignore the women out the window.

Chad...didn't understand why anyone wouldn't want to help someone else move, so he sat a little, rubbing his neck in confusion. A good chunk of that was trying to figure out how he could talk about something like that when there were things outside that people needed protection from.

Even if he's not the most diplomatic member of his family.

Yeah, so life sucks today. If I get home and have a brain after my appointments I'll try and do more than tag in, but no promises.
