Care for Magical Creatures; Friday, Period 2 [ 03/06 ].

Coming into the classroom today, the students would find that Minsc had things set up for a slide show.

Oh, this was going to be interesting...

"Good morning, class!" Minsc greeted them brightly. "As you can see, I am no longer a bear, which is very good, although my time as a bear was certainly interesting. And I really could not have thought of a better example of unintentional transformation than that, because, I assure you, I did not wake up that morning intending to be a bear!"

"But, as you can see, I am back to myself and whole. I had the luck of changing entirely back, not a stitch of bear fur on me! But I must warn you! Not all transformations will turn out so smoothly! Usually, this will happen due to error on the spell or the enchantment or perhaps the persons involved. Today, we are going to talk about the kinds of half-transformations that can occur and how you can best avoid them. Let's have a look!"

The first slide clicked on after the lights were dimmed:

"So!" said Minsc. "Sometimes, it is natural for a creature to seem only half transformed, and these creatures are very cool. Take the mermaid, half lady half fish, for example. Very cool! Excellent swimmers and very clever about the usage of shells. Or the centaur! Half person half horse! Also cool! You're your own cavalry!"

The slide clicked again:

"However, most combination are not as cool as these ones. I knew a guy who wound up being half man half chicken! NOT COOL! We want to avoid those transformations. But how do we do it? We must be careful to avoid potential danger!"

Thenext slide:

"One of the biggest threats to wonky, awkward, bad transformations are magical items! Also falling into this category are unexpected traps, but that are harder to draw. Here you have a girdle, a ring, and an amulet, the most common forms, although it can come as anything, even a spoon! So be careful with items, and if you get any loot from battles or quests, always identify them before using them or else you'll find yourself with a rhinoceros nose or maybe a dumb smelly gnoll brain!"

And the next:

"Another popular cause of crappy transformations are bad, evil wizards! You can usually tell a wizard when you spot one because they wear robes and almost always have facial hair. Especially beards. Because they are magic users, not fighters, and so they just stay back and shoot fireballs and shit at you and don't have to worry about someone yanking their beard and chopping off their heads! But, yes, wizards will try to turn you into stuff. If you are fighting them, they might mess up the spell, and, instead of turning you into a harmless kitten, only winds up giving you whiskers and a tail and a sudden craving to bat little shiny things around. Avoid them. Usually, it helps to kill them dead before they finish their spell."

The next:

"Not all wizards are male. Many of them are female. You can usually distinguish a female wizard from a male wizard, because even though they both wear robes, a female wizard usually has very large bosoms falling out of hers and she usually does not have a beard. Usually."

And another:

"Speaking of bosoms, you'll want to watch out for these vixens! Sirens and dryads are notorious for turning people into other things, and they do it by singing and, like wizards, if messed up, they might mess you up! Sirens and dryads can be easily detected because they wear no clothes and usually have perky breasts. And that whole singing stuff. Not only can a song kill a man if they hear too much of it, but they get incredibly stuck in your head, too. It is so annoying!"

And the last:

"Finally, and, remember, these are just some examples, there is the basilisk. The basilisk is an enemy I have had to face many a time, and they mean business! They are hard to fight because one look at them can turn you into stone! Sometimes, with half a look, they can turn you into half-a-stone, so you're stuck in one place because you're solid from the waist down, or you've literally got rocks for brains if they get your head! Being half-transformed by a basilisk is one of those situations were you hope you have friends and hope they have a stone to flesh scroll! I actually adventured with a very lovely cleric by the name of Branwen, who we rescued from such a fate! She was a very pretty statue, but an even better fighter!"

After the slide-show was over, Minsc preened proudly and turned on the lights again. "Now," he said, "I have for you all these little cards. On each one is half an animal. I'd like you to go and put together some interesting combinations of transformations and then write down the combination. Then write a little bit about whether this is a COOL conversation, or a NOT COOL conversion. Remember our model for COOL and NOT COOL: Cool is being a mermaid with pretty hair and a fin or a centaur with great powerful warhorse legs. Not cool is being a man stuck with a chicken for a body."

"Ask any questions you would like about the topic, and have at it!"

Leto found himself wondering a little about this focus on beards and bosoms, but decided to let it go.

As he watched the presentation, John was slightly concerned by the drawings. Especially the Basilisk. Very disturbing.

Firekeeper was looking more and more uncomfortable as the discussion went on. The maimalodalu were "cool" people, as far as she understood the term. But what had happened to them was not so, by any stretch of the imagination.

Dōjima...wasn't exactly paying attention.

Instead she kept touching a flower (http://dojima-hime.livejournal.com/23050.html?thread=718858#t718858) she'd tucked into her ponytail, smiling slightly before attempting to return to her notes. Notes filled with doodles of flowers, but at least she was trying.

Gwynn was very confused as she took notes.

Alex took some notes, wondering a bit about the topic at hand.

Reno was taking copious notes, this class around.

Because the last thing he ever wanted when going back to Gaia was to pick up an item that would somehow leave him half frog.

It wasn't quite clear what the definition of 'cool' and 'not cool' in terms of conversions were, so Leto assumed it was merely a question of subjective taste. Still, the exercise was amusing enough, and he found himself approving of quite a few combinations.

Firekeeper sighed and reached in to the box to grab some cards. Instead of two at once, though, she happened to grab three because humans are totally animals, mkay?

Human, wolf, jaguar

It took all of her self-control not to fling the cards away from her in anger and grief.

Instead, she reached for the reassuring presence of Blind Seer at her side, scratching behind his ears.

Merlin kept his head down during most of the lecture for... various reasons. He sighed and pulled two cards to get:

Elephant and Lion

Oh god.

Reno pulled out two cards and kind of stared for a while.

...

"This'd be easier to judge if I even knew what an aardvark or a coelacanth was, yoto."

The good sir was here, and quietly perusing the colourful... display of cards from time to time.

Firekeeper was here, looking quite unsettled by the whole topic.

even though they both wear robes, a female wizard usually has very large bosoms falling out of hers

The accompanying picture is a thing of beauty!
