Leadership: Wednesday, Period 1, Class 8 (3/4/09)

"Once you've defined the problem you need to develop an action plan," Nathan said as he passed around that week's handouts. "Your action plan is the steps you are going to take in order to solve this problem. Today I want you to get into groups and develop an action plan to solve a problem.

"The problem is this: As a group, you want to convince me not to give you guys a final exam. Put your heads together - not literally - and come up with a plan for how you're going to convince me to do that. For the record, the odds that I'm going to agree with you are pretty small, but for the sake of the class let's see what you come up with."

Nathan grinned at them. "I'm here if you have any questions."

Lee was already getting his hopes up that this could work and they wouldn't have a final.

He was so innocent sometimes.

"Maybe plying him with candy will work," Lee suggested.

"He doesn't really seem the candy type," Peyton said drily.

Peyton Sawyer

Dōjima

"No final for us means less work for him," Dōjima announced as she grabbed a seat. "Rather than put all the effort into thinking something up, writing it, getting it copied, and then needing to grade it, that's all time that could be spent solving world hunger or something."

"Besides, there's those experts that claim a standardized test doesn't actually measure learning, so he should just grade us on how he feels we know the topic."

Yasutora Sado

"Well...maybe start with the candy and figure out something more?" Lee tried. He was stuck on candy. He didn't know why.

Tahiri Veila

. . . yeah, Tahiri wasn't even thinking of doing that to convince him not to give them a final.

"Something practical that puts our skills to use, instead of just a test?" Tahiri chimed in distractedly.

Chad's hangover had, thankfully, significantly lessened today, which made listening and paying attention in class slightly less difficult.

"Gift basket," Chad offered, because then you could put all sorts of things, including candy in there.

"What all can go in a gift basket?" Lee wondered. "Anything we want, right?"

"Maybe a logical explanation of how our class work and stuff already adequately demonstrates or knowledge of the topic?" Peyton suggested.

"That's still kind of like an exam, though," Chad said. "Just oral instead of written."

He wondered if anyone would snicker over oral.

Hoshi Sato

"So, the way I see it, there's an alternative to a final exam," said Hoshi. "We could find a way to demonstrate leadership in a way that shows we've learned something this semester. And ideas on how to do that?"

Naomi Wildman

Naomi nodded, "maybe we could do that by applying something that we've done this semester?"

"Exactly!" said Hoshi, smiling. "Any suggestions?"

"Still easier to say, 'hey we learned all this stuff and didn't our classwork already prove it', than to take a test, right?"

Inara Serra

Inara sighed and prepared herself for an exercise in futility. Still, the challenge had piqued her interest and she began writing a list of possible arguments.

"Well, would the test be standardized, then?" Inara asked, feeling them getting a little off topic. "Plus, it sounds like it would be a lot of work to come up with a situation that makes it possible to grade us on based our own merits and experience, especially when we all have such varying skill levels."

She considered Professor Petrelli from her seat. "Does anyone know Professor Petrelli? What might make him change his mind about something?"
