Care for Magical Creatures; Friday, Period 2 [ 02/13 ].
Coming into the classroom today, the students would find the usual set-up, but a person sitting beside Minsc who was not usually there. Minsc himself was beaming with a sort of pride and excitement; the stern looking woman with the pointed ears sticking out of her blonde hair did not look nearly as enthusiastic.
"Good morning, class!" Minsc greeted them. "As you can all see, we have a special guest today, and she is a very good friend of mine, so I expect only the utmost respect or you can find your butts kicked right into detention! I will let her introduce herself!"
The woman sighed, sliding what could best be described as an eyeroll toward Minsc before looking toward the students. "Hello," she said, in an accent that, if Minsc's was vaguely Scandinavian, hers was trying very hard to be Russian, "my name is Jaheira and I have adventured with Minsc in the past. Allow me to say that it was a very....interesting experience, but we have been through a lot together and I consider him my friend, even if I consider him quite insane. I am actually surprised you can all sit here seriously expecting to learn from this man, although I suppose he does know his stuff when it comes to magical creatures."
"He has informed me," she continued, "that this class is specializing in shapeshifting, which is something that I specialize in, as well. I am a druid, which means I have dedicated the whole of my life to being in tune with nature, which has given me some very strong abilities. One of them is to turn into the form of a wolf. He has asked me to come and talk to you about intentional transformations like this. Intention transformations are very difficult to manage, even if you are very good at it or born with the innate ability, as a werewolf or a vampire might be. And it is very important to keep in mind the rather severe differences between a human form and an animal form. It is also important to know a lot about the society of creature in which you are turning into. I, for one, know that wolves," her eyes may have shifted toward a certain party, although coolly, "are very keen on not only scents, but community, and can pick out one not their own in a heartbeat, and can decide whether to accept you or tear out your throat just as quickly. There are many benefits, though, to outweigh the risks. I am quicker as a wolf, more cunning and sharper and fangs do far quicker damage than a quarterstaff."
Jaheira paused, glancing toward Minsc, and he nodded.
"So I suppose the berserker wants me to stay here and field a discussion with you all if you have any questions about what it is like to be a shapeshifter for intentional purposes. I am still a little confused as to why he has emphasized intentional, but this is Minsc we are talking about, and it is not rare to be confused over just about everything that comes out of his mouth."
Minsc just may have preened a little, and he took up the talking. "That is right! We have a genuine shapeshifter here, one who turns into a creature intentionally all the time, so ask her questions! Do not be afraid! Even in her wolf form, Jaheira will not bite."
There was a pause. "Not unless you give her damn good reason to, anyway! And please note, I am giving you an assignment. For next week, I would like a two-page report written about a type of shapeshifter, be it druid like Jaheira, werewolf, wererabbit, vampire, or any other interesting thing you can come up with and turned into my by class! Now, come on! Ask away!"
