So You Want to Make a TV Show- 2nd Period- Class #6

As soon as the bell rang and everyone was seated, Dana said, "Extra credit for anyone who stands up and tells us all the most embarrassing thing they did this weekend."

Once that was over with, she went on, "I'm going to take a little itsy bitsy bit of pity on you guys. Not only am I giving you a bit of a break, but I'm actually going to tell you what it is you're doing in this class. This," she said, patting the room's TV, which had two sportscasters paused on it, "is Sports Night. This is my show. And this is what I'm going to be making you do.

"See, all the stuff you're doing? The research, the errands? That's just the start. By the end of this class, you're going to put together your own show. One or two people will host it, and we're going to put on an actual production with you all doing the work. So when you do these assignments, I want you to be thinking about what you like to do, what you want to avoid, and what you could deal with doing if you don't really care. Today we're going to watch an episode. Really watch it, and see if you can't put yourself up there. Call it escapism."

Well? What's the most embarrassing thing you did? "I almost got killed" trauma totally gets extra, and Dana'll give that to you after class if you don't want to stand up and say something.

"Nothing, really. Just...worked out a lot." Jack shrugged.

"That's disappointing," Dana said. "What's more disappointing is that you didn't make something up to earn the extra credit."

"Hey, I'm not going to lie just to get some extra credit here," he said, getting a teeensy bit riled up.

"That's nice. It's also no skin off my back," Dana said casually, and moved on to the next student.

It was all over radio anyway; Turtle figured she might as well get the extra credit, standing up and giving a sigh.

"I got married."

"Congratulations," Dana told her with a little smile. "Somewhere my mother is yelling that one of my students beat me to that. I'm not getting you a gift, sorry."

Turtle grunted a little. "That's fine; I don't want a gift, especially since it wasn't a real wedding but this morning was really awkward. And then there's the whole fact that I have to admit that my boyfriend was right about needing to trap me in a closet."

Dinah was really trying to decide. Because there was so much to choose from. Finally:

"I got into a catfight in the pond with some woman dressed as a cat."

"Very nice. Making good half-appropriate use of the word 'catfight'. Brava," Dana said.

"Thanks?" said Dinah. "I still wonder who the heck that was. And if she's okay."

"I stayed normal," he said, almost happily. "Hung out with my roommate all weekend. Who was also normal. I got lucky."

Pause.

"Not literally."

"What is with people not making stuff up?" Dana said. "And thank you for clarifying with that lucky thing because that'd kind of overshoot the boundaries of appropriate classroom discussion. Or so I imagine there'd be a meeting about."

"Okay, so I was this total spoiled brat princess from like 20 years ago, and I got into a fight with one of my best friends and this fu- freaking little girl vampire bit me and I passed out on the grounds," Claire said, as she glared at anyone who dared laugh. "And my boyfriend was a girl."

Dana tilted her head. "Traumatic at the onset, but just remember, you hold a trump card here," she said. "Next time anyone says they had a bad weekend, you can bring up the vampire thing and that should effectively stop their bitching."

Claire brightened at that. "Think anyone off the island would believe me?"

"On this island? Where I saw flying people and a crimefighting duck this weekend?" Dana said. "Yes. Yes, I do think people would believe you."

"But off the island," Claire repeated. "Like, when I go home. There aren't exactly vampires running around L.A."

At least, not in her universe.

"Um, I argued with a woman dressed in vinyl who thought she was part cat," Adora admitted.

"It's like two halves of a catfight," Dana noticed. "No pond, though?"

"Oh no!" Adora exclaimed a little over enthusiastically. "It was purely verbal arguing!"

"I ran out of liquor."

React, hide your faces, try to sneak out.

Jack looked around, wondering how bad other peoples' weekends were.

Talk, take notes, actually pay attention, what have you.

Dinah was watching very very quietly. But these guys were pretty funny.

"We'll bring you the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, and because we've got soccer highlights, the sheer pointlessness of a zero-zero tie."

It kinda cheered her up from her weekend.

Hannibal didn't take any notes but he did pay attention. He was just glad that this show could hold his attention because he hadn't slept much this weekend and he didn't need to be nodding off in class.

Adora's eyes were on the TV.

Okay, maybe they wandered over the other students in the room now and then, but she tried very hard to pay attention.

Claire frowned at the screen and mentally added scruff and about five years to the Casey guy.

The fact the show was supposed to be about sports went over her head; it was just bizarre to see her brother on TV.

Turtle was making a pretty good effort to pay attention, but it was kind of hard to do when all she could think about was how much of an idiot she was all weekend and the fact that it preserved for all of humanity in the radio archives now, too.

Who clearly has new icons.

I'd say sorry for the lameness, but Firefox crashed not once, not twice, but THREE times while gathering the links for the assignment so I took it as a sign. Besides, I figure y'all miiiiight be played out like me. :D
