Foreign languages

Good morning and welcome to languages. I am Morpheus, Dream of the Endless. You may call me Dream.

Today I would like for us to get to know each other and talk about why we're here. Please take a few minutes to read the syllabus--if you have any questions about it, now's the time to ask. Then let's go around the room and introduce ourselves. Please also state why you're taking this class.

[ooc: Same deal as yesterday: one post for all language classes, separate comment groups for each. Probably won't be able to participate much during the day again. Yay working for a living.]

Good morning and welcome to Cat. I hope you all have your permisson slips. No transformations without some kind of permission.

::pads into class looking rather disheveled. He winces slightly at loud noises::

Good morning, Mr. Dream. I'm an emancipated minor, so what forms do I need to complete?

Sign your permisson slip, I suppose. The office requires paperwork.

::rummages through bookbag for permission slip. Finally digs it out, fills it out, and hands it over to Dream::

Got my permission form right here. Da faxed it over this morning. *glances at it, frowning* He was a little confused, but I guess he figures I know what I'm about.

*Paige walks in, looking happy, she now has black hair (it was red earlier), she puts the form on Dream's desk and goes over to a back table*

Once we'll all here we'll start experiencing the world as cats. For the first few classes we'll stay in the classroom and deal with stimulus in here. When you all feel comfortable enough we'll leave the classroom and take short trips around campus. The final will involve going into town and what we learn there.

Ready?

I'm as ready as I can be without knowing what exactly to expect. Is there anything we need to do in preparation?

The only preparation is in doing. We'll start with just a short transformation, to get used to the difference. A change so large can be frightening the first time.

I'm ready, I think *puzzled look*

*ambles in, firmly believing that the best way to avoid being punished for tardiness is to pretend never to have been tardy in the first place*

Ready. Yes, quite--we're going to what?

*rushes in dreadfully late* SORRY!! I got hit by a bus!!

It must have been a small bus.

The class description did mention transforming into cats.

I'm not just being fanciful.

If you're worried about the transformation I'll make it short. It does take some getting used to.

*Hands in signed permission slip*

I'm Michael. I'm definitely looking forward to experiencing the world from a cat's perspective.

Wonderful. It's good to be open-minded.

Permission slip, permission slip... *rummages through knapsack* Ooh, here it is. *giggles a bit when he realises who, exactly, signed it*

(OOC: I know just enough of what's going on on Power Rangers this season for that to be hilarious.)

This semester we'll be focusing on French, Spanish and German, with side trips.

Sipping coffee, he walks in, sliding into an empty seat and thinking that he'd better get used to getting up at least this early.

Rogue walks in, refreshed from lunch, and unlike many of her classmates, sleeping until 10. She sits in a dest near the center of the room: not to far back, not to far forward.

Rory wanders in and takes a seat next to a nice-looking girl with interesting steaks in her hair and wearing a pair of incongruous opera gloves.

She smiles shyly at the girl, and takes out her class materials.

Rogue smiles back. She brushes a stray strand of white hair back from her face as she says, "Hi, I'm Rogue."

Rory grins. She's never been the outgoing one...

"Hi, I'm Rory...I um, like your hair."

Rogue's smile dims slightly, though barely enough to be noticable. "Thanks. It's...well, it's natural." Sort of. Quick to change the subject, she queries, "Do you speak any of these languages already? I mean, besides English, of course."

Rory creases her brow at what she perceived as Rogue's discomfort, but decides not to question it.

"Well, I have some basic French and Spanish, but I really want to get good at all of it. My mom and I want to backpack across Europe at some point, and communication with the natives might be good."

*slumps into seat* I would hope we give due consideration to Gaelic.

We will, all in its own time.

Decent combination of languages, I guess. Where will we be going on these side trips?

Hi. Hamlet. I'm from northern Europe, so this class seemed kind of useful for travel and stuff.

We'll be going into the Germanic languages, the Latinate ones, the non-Indo-European group, the Slavic . . .

*takes a seat in the back, hoping he has the right room and class here*

I want to disillusion you from any ideas that this will be an easy class. We'll be studying Old English, Anglo-Saxon and Norman French in addition other languages that influenced English.

If you change your mind, now's the time.

Lisa rushes into class, but realizes she is the first one there. She takes a seat in the front of the classroom and begins to organize her books and papers.

Good Morning, Mr. Dream. I'm Lisa Cuddy, I should be on your classlist. I must say I am very excited for your class. I know little about the subject matter, but I thought that studying the Origins of English would be good preparation for college exams.

*glances at clock* Good afternoon.

*looks flustered*

Oh wow, I must have lost track of time in the library. I understand the enrollment for this class is fairly small. May I ask how class will be run?

We'll start with an overview of the phonetic alphabet. It will come in handy as we get into things like vowel shifts and regional pronounciation.

Professor Dream? When you have a moment, I have a question about my schedule, and a conflict with Asiatic Languages.

Yes, what is the conflict?

Advanced Negotiations, sir. Evidently I confused the meeting time for AN with that of Diplomacy. I've switched to a different section, but it still meets from 3-5 on Monday. I was hoping I could make up the classwork for that section of Asiatic Languages during one of the open Labs, or the tutoring section?

If that is not possible, then I understand. I'll have to ask to switch into Languages of Europe, however, in order to avoid problems.

A large part of your grade is class participation. I don't see a realistic way to make up an entire class in lab time. Perhaps you should wait and take Asian languages next semester.

*disappointed* No, I suppose not. _Nuts! Very well, sir. Could I then be allowed to sign up for Languages of Europe, at 1-3 TTH?
