Science! Club, Friday, 5th Period

On the door to the science lab was a note directing people to meet in the Danger Room.

"So, uh," Sokka greeted people, once they had assembled, "this whole being-in-charge-of-a-club thing... means that I have to prepare things ahead of time. I'm not too good at that. Um. So, today, we're going to talk about collisions and friction." He passed around two handouts -- both of which had been printed out directly from Wikipedia -- and taped a copy of each to the wall.

"Good talk," he announced. "Okay, let's use 'em."

He hit a button and the room filled with air hockey and pool tables.

"Not the white," Mac said, smiling as she grabbed another cue. "That one goes in, the other person gets an extra shot."

"Also, you don't want to pot the black until last."

It was only when you had to explain it, you realised how weird this game really was.

Ben nodded along. "Okay. Are the other colors significant too, then?"

"Uh, not the colours, so much as the patterns," Mac explained. "Whichever set you sink one of first, that's the set you've got to get. All stripes or all solids. The colours just look pretty."

"... I think that's about all the big rules."

"Thanks," Ben said with a grin as he leaned over the table.

Using the Force would totally be cheating, but he had an engineer's eye for angles.

He hit the white ball precisely and knocked three balls--all striped--into various pockets. "Like that?"

"... Just like that," Mac confirmed, looking distinctly impressed. "You sure you haven't done this before?"

"I'm a quick study," he said, looking a little embarrassed.

"Really quick," Mac commented, gesturing to the table again. "You get another go," she said. "For getting balls in."

"I think I actually sent the ball off the table a couple of times the first time I played." Not a natural with any form of sports, Mac.

Ben laughed. "I'll try not to do that," he promised, trying to bank the white ball off the side of the table and misjudging the angle. It spun past the striped ball he'd been aiming for. "Clearly there's still room for improvement."

"Well, good," Mac said with a smile as she circled the table for a good shot. "I need that chance to catch up a little."

She paused, backed up, and lined up an easy looking target at a red ball poised very usefully at the mouth of a pocket. Just a bit of luck on her part.

She stood back up as it went in. "One down." Several more to go.

"Nice shot," Ben said. "I was worried I was going to hit that one in accidentally."

"It was oh so nicely set up for me there," Mac agreed with a little laugh. "If only I was always as lucky."

Her next shot hit one of her own balls, but just sent several rolling around the table to little effect.

"I'm not, obviously."

He laughed. "There's got to be a trick to this," he said, lining up his shot and dropping another striped ball into a pocket.

He next shot went wide.
