So You Want to Make a TV Show- 2nd Period- Class #5

"Morning!" Dana greeted the class, looking almost chipper. "There's a paper on your desks. If you write your name on it with the name of the team that won the Super Bowl, you get free extra credit. Did anyone watch? Anyone win any money? Because I won money. Don't gamble, kids, it's wrong and immoral but damn it's fun when you win.

"Anyway," she said, smile fading just a little bit, and wasn't happy Dana a little terrifying? "Last week I sent you all on errands to show you a little bit of what the life of the production assistant is like. Today we're going to work on research. Again, it's high-pressure. People will be throwing names and dates at you and you have to come up with information on them like that. You're not expected to know everything. However, you are expected to be able to find it.

"In a situation like a sports show, you'd have archival footage to go through, too. Since we don't really have that here, we're just going to keep it simple. You have assignments. You have till the end of class to get me as much information on your subject as possible. You can go to the library, you can use the computer lab, anything else you probably don't have time for. You don't even need to write me up a report on the person, but I want to be able to kill a few trees with all the info you give me at the end of class. We're going to be very bad to the environment today. Skip a shower tomorrow, it will completely make up for it." She could say that because she didn't have any of them in a class tomorrow.

Dinah wrote up Pittsburgh Steelers over Arizona Cardinals, 27-23 and passed it forward, glad she'd caught that much of the show.

She was a little sad that she'd lost ten bucks, though.

Jenny wrote, The team with the towels. Pittsburgh, I think? and handed it in.

Amazed by how happy Ms. Whitaker was for class, Adora got out a pen and scrawled neatly on a sheaf of paper, the Steelers of Pennsylvania overcame the Cardinals of Arizona. Pleased that she remembered, Adora smiled and continued listening.

Hannibal wrote the damn Steelers STOLE it on his paper. He hadn't bet but man, the underdog had it and gave it away.

Claire looked blankly at her paper. She hadn't made it to the party, and she hadn't seen the news yet that morning.

Finally, she figured she had a 50-50 shot and just guessed blindly.

Arizona.

Turtle wasn't at all daunted by sports research. There was nothing in there that could be more 'high-pressure' than product and stocks research, really.

She had the extra credit: Pittsburgh Steelers beat Arizona Cardinals at a score of 27-23. It was a very exciting game, with the Steelers pulling out the winning points at the very end stretch of the game, which was pretty awesome, especially since I had a lot of money on them.

Even though gambling is very bad. By money, I mean candybars. Really. It's okay to bet candybars.

Hannibal, at least, had some idea who his person was. He wondered if he could get away with just handing in steroid abusing blowhard but decided to gather a little bit more information.

Adora tilted her head at the letters all jumbled together. "What's a Jaroomi...um." This was going to be complicated.

Claire's entire knowledge about Arnold Palmer was that he played golf and a drink was named after him.

Time to bother Cal at work, then. What a hardship.

Elton who? Why couldn't it be the hot figure skater? Dinah rushed to the library, hoping the computers there had heard of him even if she hadn't.

Jack had at least heard the name, but for research? There was no way he'd be able to get somewhere, find info, and return within an hour. He'd have to use alternate methods.

Jenny had no idea who that person might be. Time to hit the library. Ew.

Turtle didn't have a clue who that person was, but, well, she was now very eager to find out!

Jack's report was a drawing of a football. You try doing research while being four-footed and trying to write with your mouth.

Elton Brand: top pick of the Fantasy Basketball series, at least according to the hits on Google.

Power forward for the Philadelphia 76'rs, former CHicago Bull and former L.A. Clipper, he recently signed a contract with them but spent most of 2007-2008 out due to an injury, and only played 8 games last year. Brand holds a Bronze medal from the 2006 World Championships in Japan, and was also 2006 All-NBA and All-Star as well as being awarded the Sportmanship award. Despite being 2" shorter than most power forwards at 6'8", Brand is one of the top power forwards in the league, with an average of 20 points an 10 rebounds per game over his career.

He's also a film producer! And one of his films was shown at the Toronto Film Festival!

Dinah provided a link to the wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elton_Brand) entry where she got most of her info, and the Nba.com (http://www.nba.com/playerfile/elton_brand/) site with Elton's stats, as well as links to a zillion other articles on him.

Hannibal returned to class with several things on Jose Canseco. First, he handed in information his life when he was a big time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Canseco#Oakland_A.27s) baseball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Canseco#Texas_Rangers) player. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Canseco#Final_seasons)

Of course, that was all before the steroid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Canseco#Steroids) allegations, which Hannibal made sure to detail.

After that, he notated several things about his tumultuous (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a59lt3Y4z4) personal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jp6YK-_ETbc) life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3rjNOVEb30) and why he eventually became a douche.

Adora learned (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhighdorms/1559157.html?thread=128307829#t128307829) that Jaromir Jagr (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jarom%C3%ADr_J%C3%A1gr) was some sort of great hockey player who recently ditched the NHL for play abroad.

She didn't pretend to understand any of the papers she'd printed, but at least they were there.
