"Good morning, students!" As usual, they were meeting in the classroom, with all the comfortable pillows that would do much better than desks and Minsc was greeting them all jovially with Boo close at hand. "Welcome back to class! Remember how last class we discussed spotting out a regular old animal from a person transformed into an animal? If not, well, I sure hope that was quite a blow causing you to forget it! Today, we are going to talk about making a very important checklist to see if our friends are transformed! For example:

"If I were to make a checklist for whether or not a human is actually Boo, it might include things like: Is he eating everything in sight? Is he twitching his nose as if he would usually have whiskers? Does he have a tendency to burrow in crinkly things?"

"And, also for example, if Boo were to make a list for me," he chuckled, "which is a very big if since Boo cannot write or speak languages our petty brain can comprehend, he would include: Are there any noticeable purple markings by his eyes? Telltale scars? What happens when I put him by this gnoll, which is dirty and awful and must be immediately vanquished? Things like that!"

"I'd like you each to get together with someone else in class and discuss the sorts of things they someone would put on a list about you! There is an uneven number, so groups of two or three are both okay! And your HOMEWORK will include making lists for your friends! You can never be too prepared! Awareness is key! And then, when your friends are turned into animals, you will know it is them and not accidentally fry up that rabbit for dinner or slay that wee dragon thinking yourself in harm's way!"

Merlin was on a roll!

"I don't," Arthur said, with a roll. Of his eyes. "You won't spread lies. Hm... 'Cannot hunt himself a meal to save his life'."

"Is both rude and insensitive," Merlin replied, not rising to the bait. Except that he was.

Oh, he so was.

"Is incredibly, incredibly irritating," Arthur retorted, maturely.

"Cannot dress himself," Merlin shot back, being just as mature. And, maybe smirking a little.

"Appears to have a death wish," Arthur shot back firmly.

"Has stupid... hair."

"Have you seen your ears lately?" Arthur inquired.

"Every day, my lord." Merlin totally got him there. "Have you seen your hair?"

"Of course you do," Arthur said. He was being mild. Mild. "You'd be hard-pressed to miss them as they appear to be overtaking your head." A pause. "That was a poor attempt, Merlin."

"I thought it was rather good, actually," Merlin replied, looking very proud of himself.

"You would," Arthur replied, paused, and wrote down, "Is more than a bit slow."

"Admit it, you thought it was good."

"Merlin," Arthur said, calmly, "My hair? Really?"

Okay, maybe not so much calmly as judgingly.

"Well it is a bit true," Merlin said, peering at his hair now. "Did you wear a helmet before coming here?"

It was perfectly fine.

"My hair is fine, Merlin." It wasn't unbecoming at all for a prince to roll his eyes. "If you're going to insist on being insubordinate and insulting, at least do it properly. Sometimes I wonder how you manage to do anything at all without winding up killed."

"And just how would I be insubordinate properly?" A beat. "Sire."

"It's not my job to figure that out," Arthur said. Tartly. "Don't bother trying."

"Very defensive," Merlin said aloud as he added that.

"I am not being defensive," Arthur snapped. "Quiet."

Wrote down: Does not know when to shut up.

Merlin just smirked and kept writing.

Arthur used the great deep wells of his ability as a hunter and a warrior to peek stealthily over at what Merlin was writing.

Not that he cared.

Merlin had been writing the various odd scars the idiot had acquired since his time serving him. but now he was pulling the paper close to his chest. "That curious?"

"Not at all," he said, "Merely gathering evidence. 'Writes in completely illegible chickenscratch'."

Arthur was in his seat. He had never looked anywhere.

"My writing is perfectly fine!" Merlin objected, giving him a look for that.
