Newspaper Staff Meeting, 4 pm, Journalism Room

"Important question, for today," Rikku announced as she set down the box of donuts. "Do we want to start running ads in the paper? I think we could get some interesting submissions, if we did, and we could use the money for a party, at the end of the semester, or we could give it to somewhere that needs it. But people might like the fact that the paper is kinda ad-free, at the moment. I want to know what everyone thinks."

That is today's question. Discussion goes here, plz.

"Advertising couldn't hurt, so long as the ads don't get too big and annoying," Warren mused. "People might not like it, but they're already essentially getting what they're paying for here, aren't they?"

"That's true," she nodded. "But we don't want to get everyone ticked off about ads and have them stop reading entirely. I guess if we make sure the ads are kinda low-key, that won't happen, right?"

"If they don't like it," Cal offered with a shrug, "they don't have to look at it? I don't know; wouldn't hurt to try. Then if we get a torrent of hate-mail for it..."

"Then we'll know that we stirred up a wasp's nest," she nodded. "And we can run a huge apology and promise to never do it again."

"I think we should," Lee said. "Can't hurt, we've got lots of new businesses and money is good. Everyone else can ignore it."

"Money is awesome," Rikku agreed easily. "And lots of places would probably appreciate the publicity. So What do we want to do with the money, once we get it? Spend it on some kind of upgrade to the paper? Throw a party? Give it away?"

You can write articles about how much you love money and/or hate advertising.

"So, uhhhh," Cal took in a breath, trying to look at least a little apologetic for his lack of contribution last week, "I'm off to a great start in 2009, huh?"

Rikku laughed. "Still reeling from the phone mix-ups? It was a crazy week, wasn't it?"

No, no. Cal was just super lazy.

But he went with it.

"Oh, man, I know. Crazy, especially with the power and everything. But, hey, Rikku, I was thinking. You're in Journalism, too, so you remember when we covered briefs, right?"

"Right," Rikku nodded. "And the headlines that you can sing 'doo-dah, doo-dah' after. Those were fun."

"Right," Cal agreed, nodding a bit, and not to be distracted, which was easy with the doo-dah, doo-dahs. "So, maybe that's something I could do more efficiently. Briefs and stuff. For example. 'CAUGHT: Public pornography party is problematic for Merlin, who seemed unaware Wednesday night that his smut viewing would call forth the masses to the second floor common room. The big-eared Brit was mortified and will likely think twice before purveying provocative products.'"

"Or," he continued, "what would think about blind items? 'This pig-nosed princess,' for example, 'was last seen without her infamous engagement ring; this reported investigated further to discover that the marriage is officially off. Congratulations are in order for this fruitful disengagement.'"

There was a doubtful pause.

"Or is that way too gossip-rag? Or too radio, even?"

"I think it'd depend on how it was handled," Rikku mused. "We don't want people getting upset if we report stuff that's kinda mean, even if it is true. It might depend on how newsworthy it is. You could give it a try, though. And the briefs sound neat."

Cal nodded a little. "Something to think about. And not any meaner that anything that might show up on radio, either."

"First few weeks of school roundup?" Lee suggested. "We've had some weird things happen and we didn't really do a welcome new students kinda deal."

"That sounds awesome," she grinned. "Welcome to Fandom, please check your sanity at the door. You'll get used to the weird in no time."

For she is here. (zomg, I did not hit send o.o)

Ghanima was indeed there, and paying attention to the discussion.

Rikku hesitated before approaching their advisor. "Miss Ghanima?" she asked. "Do you think it's okay to run ads? In the paper, I mean."

"I don't see why not," Ghanima responded. "Considering the students get it for free, you would need to cover expenses somehow. Just because we're school-sponsored, doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement that could be made using advertising revenue."

She leaned forward slightly, eyes dancing. "Also, I heard a rumor that pizza parties might be good for staff morale."

"Pizza parties are awesome," Rikku laughed. "So far, it pays for itself, but ... yeah. It'd be nice. And I think it might be interesting, seeing what sort of ads we get in? There are lots of places in town that people don't even know are there."
