Cooking Club [Home Ec Classroom, Thursday]

It was Thursday and that meant Ned was in the Home Ec classroom, getting things ready to actually cook today. That was the benefit of power, they could actually make things.

When everyone filed in, Ned started talking.

"Hey guys," he said, waving dorkily. "Glad to see you all came back and didn't ditch because we didn't have power last week. This week, we do have power so we're going to do what we did last week and that's breakfast foods. I was going for new club session equaling breakfast which is the first thing you typically eat in the mornings. First meeting, first meal. It made sense when I thought of it."

He laughed nervously.

"Anyway, there's both recipes and ingredients to make omelets, french toast, waffles, pancakes, crepes, bacon, sausage, eggs, oatmeal and grits," he said. "And then we can eat them. Oh, and there's cereal too in case anyone doesn't wanna cook. That's completely fine."

Ned gestured at the tables and said, "Let's get cooking."

"You're not bothering me," he said slowly. "I just didn't know if you'd eaten and I could make something for you."

"I ain't yet but you don't got t'make anythin' for me. Are you makin' breakfasts today?" she wondered.

"Yep!" He nodded quickly. "What's your favorite breakfast food?"

"Pancakes?" she requested.

"Anything in them?" Ned asked.

"Strawberries?" she asked hopefully.

"Strawberries," he said. "I'll bake them into the pancakes and you can have strawberry pancakes."

"It ain't no bother?" she asked curiously. "I just came t'cheer, not t'make you feed me."

"I'm going to be cooking a few things," he said and smiled at her. "You can still cheer!"

Kaylee waved her pom-poms. "P-A-N-C-A-K-S! Yaaaaaaaaaaay pancakes!"

It made Ned laugh and he almost dropped the bowl of beaten eggs. "You should do one that rhymes."

"I ain't too good at rhymes," she admitted woefully.

"Do one with my name in it?" he requested.

"Ned is shiny, Ned is great! He makes the best food I ever ate!"

She beamed.

"Lookit, it rhymes an' it's got your name."

"You get extra strawberries for that."

Well, no, there was another reason.

"You get extra because I love you."

"I love you too!" she told him gleefully. "I was gonna put that in th'cheer but it don't fit."

"When did you decide to do this for me?" Ned wondered, still grinning.

"Today!" she said cheerfully. "'Cause I remembered what day it was."

"No classes for you today?" Ned asked, finishing his eggs and grabbing pancake stuff without missing a beat.

"I only got classes on Tuesdays," she said happily, watching him. That was all kinds of hot. She'd have to remember that. "My baby class an' then the food one with you."

"Baby class?" he asked, setting the eggs aside for the moment to start mixing the pancake batter.

"Child Development," she amended. "We've been playin' with fake babies so far, though."

"Is that weird?" Ned asked, shaping the batter carefully into circles.

"Nah, they're cute. But it's why I sometimes have a headache by the time I see you in class," she admitted. "Babies cry. I'm so glad we're safe with our sexin', Ned. I don't want babies 'til I know how t'shut 'em up properly."

Apparently there were no private subjects for Kaylee.

Weirdly enough, while she started talking, Ned started baking faster. It wasn't that he was trying to ignore her but she was talking about babies and he was...stressing.
