Cooking Club [Home Ec Classroom, Thursday]

It was Thursday and that meant Ned was in the Home Ec classroom, getting things ready to actually cook today. That was the benefit of power, they could actually make things.

When everyone filed in, Ned started talking.

"Hey guys," he said, waving dorkily. "Glad to see you all came back and didn't ditch because we didn't have power last week. This week, we do have power so we're going to do what we did last week and that's breakfast foods. I was going for new club session equaling breakfast which is the first thing you typically eat in the mornings. First meeting, first meal. It made sense when I thought of it."

He laughed nervously.

"Anyway, there's both recipes and ingredients to make omelets, french toast, waffles, pancakes, crepes, bacon, sausage, eggs, oatmeal and grits," he said. "And then we can eat them. Oh, and there's cereal too in case anyone doesn't wanna cook. That's completely fine."

Ned gestured at the tables and said, "Let's get cooking."

"I'm going to try omelets, I think," Chris said. "What were you thinking of?"

"Crepes, I think. I can use the time the batter needs to sit to work on the strawberries and whip up the cream and the chocolate sauce," he said as he quirked his lips.

"Omelets are good, though. Any idea on what you'll be putting in it?"

"Cheese, ham, bacon," Chris shrugged. "Maybe some veggies."

He raised an eyebrow. "You're more adventerous than I am."

"Crepes are... oddly soothing. And I think I need that today. Something about turning the pan, dealing with something so delicate. It's no phyllo, but I don't have the patience for something like that today."

He looked over at Chris.

"You're welcome to some of mine, though it'll take a bit."

"Awesome, thanks," Chris said.

He started to gather the ingredients for his project.

"Is there anything wrong?" he asked carefully. "I mean, that you need soothing?"

Wince.

He... held up a hand.

"This isn't, er, well, someone is no longer allowed to meddle with magic when they're irritated," he said with a brief flash of a smile.

"I told myself that the last time, but I've never been what you'd call 'smart' about things."

"Ah," Chris said, trying not to smirk. "Do you have a personal gain clause with your magic?"

He shook his head.

"Er, I don't think so? I've never heard of it. But I have a tendency to make supposition and theory into practice through irritation. I wasn't even trying to do anything at the time. It just sort of happened."

Chris nodded. "We get consequences if we practice selfish magic," he explained. "Um... do you need help trying to fix it?"

He shook his head.

"I'm reasonably sure that it should fade in about three days," he admitted, "but if it doesn't, I'd certainly love the help."

He looked curiously at Chris.

"Are you learning as well?" he asked, "about magic, I mean."

"Yeah, that's why my grandpa sent me and my brother here," Chris said.

"Oh."

He looked around.

"Maybe that should be a club next time. Because I know there's a few others working on that as well."

"Hmm, yeah, that would be cool," Chris agreed. "Of course, I'm graduating in May."

Ah.

"Well, there's that, then," he said because he'd never start a club. Probably.

Chris shrugged. "It's a good idea though."

He shook his head.

"I'd probably do better with a gooseball club," he admitted.

"You're graduating. Are you... are you going back to your own world?"

"Yeah, probably," Chris said. "I've applied to a few colleges."

"I've just been curious. About people graduating and all. I don't know where I'm going to end up, though I've ceased thinking they're going to kick me out."

Mostly.

"You have lots of options, at least," Chris said. "I can decide between my home world, my girlfriend's home world, or my alternate universe mother's home world."

He knew that sounded weird. "Of course, my alternate universe mother is currently living in a different dimension."

"Dimension?"

Which was the sideways headtilt of someone who doesn't question the truth but rather doesn't know what the word might mean.

"Yeah, she moved in with some friends of hers," Chris explained. "In a different world than her own."

"Ah. Well, that makes sense."

Worlds were all well and good, but people were what could make or break a place.

"So, yeah, I don't think you have to worry about not having somewhere to go after graduation," Chris said.

"I've always got Oz," he said with a brief chuckle.

"Hopefully. Things are a little wild there at the moment. College isn't really much of an option."

He frowned. "That sucks."
