Leadership: Wednesday, Period 1, Class 4 (1/28/09)

Nathan started to pass around the class handouts. "Today we're going to talk about skills. Being a good leader means understanding what you can do, and what you can't. Some of these are basic skills: are you good with a weapon? Are you good at math? Can you play the saxophone? Others are what we call 'soft skills.' Are you good with people? Can you motivate a team? Can you communicate effectively?

"Since I assume you already know your basic skills, today I'd like you to discover your soft skills. Take the following test. There's no right or wrong answers, just what you feel is right for you. At the end you'll see what your strengths are. If you're comfortable with it, share with the class and let us know how you think these strengths apply to a position of leadership."

She was taking notes, but Tahiri seemed to be a little edgy with anticipation today.

Naomi took down detailed notes.

Zayne did take notes. It was much easier to do so in this class than it was in Mad Kings and Queens. He was sure his datapad appreciated it.

Lee took the test as honestly as he could and wasn't too surprised at the results he came out with.

"Looks like I'm highly capable and highly interested in leadership, influencing, organizational awareness, risk taking, integrity, teamwork, flexibility and drive," he said. Considering his father, those made sense. "But I suck at critical thinking, commercial orientation and customer focus. I should probably stay away from customer service jobs."

He could only imagine how quick it'd take him to start cursing at a pushy customer.

"Uhh," Chad looked over his test results again, "it says I've got high marks in drive, listening, confidence, and flexibility. I guess some of that is useful for leading."

They sounded a lot more like good second wing-man type of traits, though, if he were to be completely honest.

Inara took the test quietly, trying not to think to much about her answers, even if she thought perhaps the skill level determination should have come from an outside source. Her results, at least, seemed credible.

"My strengths seem to be primarily in teamwork, relationship building, customer focus, and integrity, but I apparently have no skills at breakthrough/critical thinking, technological awareness, creativity, or change orientation. So," she sighed, "basically, I can help build and hold a team together, but then I have no idea how to make it go forward or do anything that isn't already the status quo."

"I got high marks for teamwork and risk taking," Tahiri said. "Yeah, no surprise there. But I suck at the same stuff Lee does. No surprise there either."

She'd gotten high marks in a few other things, but she was fairly sure the test was wrong about them, and thus ignoring them.

"Yeah, so I suck at problem solving and leadership," Peyton said. "And I need to work at teamwork, decision making and self-confidence. The rest I guess I'm pretty good at."

Sections of the test almost made Dōjima laugh aloud. Her personal relationship abilites were terrible, as evidenced by this weekend, and she made sure to be brutally honest about her 'personal and professional standards of integrity and behaviour'.

She was a spy. Integrity wasn't on the agenda.

"I'm confident, I'm willing to take charge and take risks, and I'm pretty good at it," she said, looking at the paper. "But I'd be the worst shop girl in the history of the world; I've got no customer focus or commercial orientation."

Ichigo had taken the test and somehow managed to give himself high interest in most of it (well, except the commercial stuff because ugh). Not that it meant that he was necessarily really good at it. "Um... I just seem to fail at the whole planning thing, really."

"I scored really high in teamwork, relationship building, and integrity, but I scored really low in planning and self-confidence," Zayne said. "Pretty much what I expected, really."
