The Library; Monday [ 01/26 ].

Clutching a coffee and still kind of missing his bruises (shut up; they made him feel macho), Cal came into the library, expecting the same sort of nice, tedious day as usual. Sort books, stack books, read, lunch, read, and out. Maybe with the person or two drifting in. Same old, same old, but it was kind of nice to have that sort of dependency on things.

So Ms. Whitaker (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/2003932.html?thread=127593436#t127593436) always made Claire feel like she needed to be in a hurry.

That didn't mean she couldn't flirt just a little, and, somewhere between the TV classroom and here, she had run a brush through her hair and added lipstick.

"Hi!"

Claire stopping in during the morning was a little bit of a surprise, especially since he knew he'd see her later for art club, but Cal was definitely not complaining. His attention seemed to perk up a little.

"Hey."

Claire smiled and pushed her hair back, almost forgetting for a second that she was there for work.

"How's life in libraryland?"

"Very library-like?" Cal offered, because he realized that, yes, that was the best he could come up with. "There's books and stuff this week just like last week. I can really dig that kind of familiarity."

"So at least one thing here is just kind of normal every single week," Claire nodded. "Yeah. I could get used to that too."

"Of course," Cal added in a musing tone, "there could always be the random banana, but so far, so good. How's your day going?"

"Life has to have random bananas," Claire told him, with a straight face. "And ... not bad. I'm supposed to get some old articles about Larry Bird for TV class, do you know how I'd do that?"

Considerately, she added, "He was a basketball player in the '80s."

Cal laughed a little, because he was just about to ask who the hell Larry Bird was. "Okay," he said, "I think I can help with that. What team did he play for?"

He was getting up and gesturing for Claire to follow him. Actually helping, and doing his job.

Crazy.

"Uh..." Claire was pretty sure 'not the Lakers' was not the right answer, and she looked stupid in thought for a moment as she trailed behind Cal.

"Boston Celtics!" she finally remembered, blurting. "He's like the token white guy."

"Okay," Cal said with a nod. "We'll pull up some microfilm from 80s Boston newspapers, maybe? That's bound to have something."

"Definitely," Claire agreed, bumping into him lightly and accidentally-on-purpose. "Uh, maybe Sports Illustrated, too?"

Either Claire was suddenly clumsy, or she did that accidentally-on-purpose. He glanced a little over his shoulder toward her, trying to keep a grin down. "We could do that, too, in the periodicals sections. What kind of article do you need?"

She shot a grin back. "She didn't really say," Claire confided. "Maybe, like, general profile kinds of things? It's supposed to be showing us how to be a good gopher."

Her eyes rolled at that.

"Maybe the Sports Illustrated would be better, then," Cal decided, changing his course, which just so happened to mean doing so so suddenly that, whoops, there's a Claire in the way. "Over here. A gopher, huh?"

"Like a production slave," Claire said, giggling at his sudden rerouting as he tapped into her. "I got lucky. That blond girl Jenny had to go get coffee and Adora had to make a zillion copies."

"And you got to come to the library," Cal observed, unable to avoid grinning, because he was pretty sure that was a giggle.

"And she has like no reason to care who I'm dating," Claire said, grinning back at him. "I got crazy lucky."

"I guess I kind of benefited from it, too," Cal noted.

"Random midday visit? Yeah, that doesn't suck," Claire agreed. "I'm just glad you aren't sick of me yet."
