So You Want to Make a TV Show- 2nd Period- Class #4

When everyone had shown up and taken a seat, Dana started out by warning, "Don't get too comfortable. You're not going to be here long. Now, we're going to start doing some hands-on work here in class, and this means we have to start from the beginning. Also known as the very bottom. Welcome to the life of the production assistant.

"The production assistants are also known as gophers, because they go for everything. They're the ones we send on errands, make do the menial labor that won't get us in trouble, send off to do the little boring stuff we don't have time to do or just don't want to because we have PA's. It's sometimes hard work, sometimes extremely, extremely boring, you don't always have the information you need and have to improvise to get it right because you'd better get it right, and to top it all off, it pays like crap. It's what we call 'paying your dues'. No, I never had to do it, if you're wondering, but I know plenty of people who have so that makes it better." No, it didn't.

"What I have for you today is a list of assignments that I picked at random, out of a hat, and assigned to your names," she said, walking around to hand every student an index card with their assignment on it. You have until the end of class to get them done. Be back here by then, and if lunch gets here, then you have something to take with you. Now go. Shoo. Get it done."

Though she's pretty quick today.

Dinah was really, really glad that she'd gotten that voice recorder this time, to keep up with Dana. Woo!

Hannibal was a little excited about this assignment. Anything that meant he didn't have to sit down and take notes was tops to him.

Adora listened intently, hoping she was up to whatever task Ms. Whitaker had in store for her.

Claire wondered how Dana got out of gophering as she listened.

Turtle grinned, just slightly, at the lecture.

This should be fun. It was like the queen getting to play the peasant for the day.

Or, well, an hour.

She wondered if just calling up Apu and putting him to work like usual would be cheating.

Oh so that's what Scooter's job title was.

[If you don't want to play it out, or if there's a post you need that hasn't gone up, feel free to handwave having done the assignment. Make it as easy or difficult as you want. Also, if there's anything of Dana's that might require modding (cell phone, computer), it's fair game, do with it what you will, just know if you break it she might fail your ass.]

Adora- I need fifty copies of this meeting agenda, now. No, I don't know where a copier is, just find one.
Jack- Stand there. No, don't say a word. Just stand by and wait for instructions.
Claire- Get me some old news articles on Larry Byrd from the library.
Hannibal- Pick up lunch. It's waiting for pickup at Ching Tai under 'Whitaker'. There's ten meals included, along with drinks.
Dinah- Drop off this film at the Photo Hut. We need it before the end of class, so I need you to get it back here before the hour's up.
Lois- I need a prop. Go get me a football we can use during the broadcast.
Robin- My cell phone's broken. Go take it wherever it goes to get repaired.
Jenny- Get me two skinny vanilla lattes. No, three. And make one of them regular. And one of them needs an extra shot of espresso in there.
Turtle- My computer's broken. I need you to call tech support and find out what's wrong with it. I keep getting error 4005's or something, I don't know.

Jack... would stand there like he got a degree from one of those finer institutions, waiting for the further instructions.

He's waiting. And waiting.

Hannibal took his assignment and sort of gawked. That was a lot of lunches. He really hoped that he wouldn't have to make two trips.

Adora blinked, she was going to have to find out what and where a copier was located. This could prove difficult.

Holy crap, easiest assignment ever. Lois had a football in her room.

Ack! Dinah grabbed the film and ran before Dana even got down the rest of the list.

Claire thought hers was easy. It was even Cal's day at the library! She headed out ~~or will once the post goes up~~ before Ms. Whitaker could make it worse.

Jenny read the notecard twice, then rewrote the list as:

One skinny vanilla latte
One skinny vanilla latte, extra shot
One regular vanilla latte
One black coffee for me

She hoped that was right.

Then she dashed out the door for the Perk. Her pack of cigarettes was out of her pocket before she was even out the door.

Oh, joy. Tech guys. Thankfully, Turtle knew how to deal with tech guys for this and that around the store. She settled in in front of the computer, pulled out her cell, and went to the task.

Robin had to think for a moment, then he grabbed the phone, and made great long hops out of the room.

Dinah got back with four minutes to spare, somewhat out of breath.

"So, the guy at the Photo Shop said there was a lot of stuff ahead of us in line, but that they do one-hour processing, but we had to pay extra," Dinah took a huge breath, "and for less than an hour, it was a bit more, and the rickshaw guy had to be paid to wait, and they really hope we can remember them if we need sponsors and next time call ahead."

Whew.

Hannibal scurried back to the class with help (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/3574876.html) in tow. They'd managed to get the food back without spilling save for one of the waiters getting distracted by some hot girl and running into Hannibal's back.

It wasn't much but Hannibal revoked the rest of their money and sent them away with a grumble.

"I've got all the food, I had to pay those two idiots to help me bring them back so I didn't have to make two trips."

Jenny returned about half an hour and one terrorized barrista later, carrying a drinks tray with three coffees in it in one hand and a coffee cup and a carefully balanced cigarette in the other. "Oh, hang on, no smoking in class, right," she said, and set her coffee down to stub out her cigarette on the sole of her boot. Then she presented the drinks tray and said, "I still don't know why a coffee would be 'skinny' but, three vanilla lattes, one regular, two skinny, one with an extra shot. And one that's black like my soul."

After a bit of doing, Turtle was ready to report on her progress, with a big, winning smile. "So," she said, "problem fixed. I got rerouted to some outsourced phone jockey, but, the good news is, Apu is fluent in Hindi, being from India and all, so I just had him talk to the guy. We figured out how to get around the problem for now, but they're going to send in a part that will prevent it from happening again. Don't worry; we managed to get it sent free of charge on account of the malfunction."

Adora rushed in, fifty copies in hand. "That was, um, more complicated than it probably should have been," she admitted. "But I completed the task?" After destroying nearly half a ream of paper attempting to figure out the proper way to use the machine.

Toward the end of class, a pink-cheeked Claire returned (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/2005234.html?thread=127647986#t127647986) with xeroxes of Sports Illustrated profiles from throughout Larry Bird's career.

"I just went to the library?" she said. "It was easy, I just took some extra time to make sure I got good articles."

Due to factors such as weather, and road conditions, Robin was not able to get to his room for his transportation, to Stark Industries, and back to class before the period was done. He got back just after the period ended, and clearly, very, very winded.

But the cell phone was fixed.

Though she'll probably only make the answers to your assignment-related questions more confusing.

If you haven't seen me whining about it yet, my Internet's being randomly weird. Some things are loading, and then they won't again, and it's all very frustrating and therefore any pings from me may or not be slow.
