Wednesday, Period 1, Class 3. (1/21/09)

"You're in charge, congratulations," Nathan said. "Now what? Implicit in being a leader is that you have somewhere that you want to go. You have a vision, a goal, and that's what you're leading everyone towards.

"Successful leaders have a solid vision. They know what they want, which helps them figure out how to get it. It also helps you stay on course. If your goal is to see a movie tonight, you know that heading to the beach is not going to help you accomplish that.

"Visions can be adapted, but you have to have one to start with." Nathan looked around. "For today's class you'll work together to start forming one. I've split you all into groups. Imagine that your group has the power to make society be whatever you want it to be. What is it like? What do people eat? Where do they work? Where do they live? What do they do for fun? What is the population like? Be specific. For example, maybe your ideal society includes people who walk instead of using cars. Maybe your society values poets more than sports figures. Use your imagination. Once you have that figured out, try to narrow it down to simple, declarative sentences. As an added bonus, these statements make for good campaign slogans. 'A chicken in every pot' may ring a bell for some of you.

"Good luck. I'm here if you need me."

Inara pulled her sweaters closer around herself as she listened to the lecture, trying to take notes where she could.

Lee just gave up on taking notes, instead tucking his hands underneath his arms and hiding his face behind the old scarf he'd dug up. Frak, it was cold.

Tahiri was bundled up in every layer she could manage, a little scowly because the cold dictated socks and boots, and though she wasn't taking notes (as if she'd opt to not keep her hands in her pockets where they'd be warmer?) she was actually paying fairly close attention.

If Zayne's robes looked bulkier than usual, that's because he was wearing layers. He was still trying to take notes, though.

Lee took a seat, blowing air into his hands while he tried to get his brain to think of anything else but 'cold cold cold frakking cold!'

"So," Tahiri said, "what do we think an ideal society should look like?"

"Well, not this frakking cold for one," Lee groused.

"And it should be peaceful," Zayne said optimistically.

Peyton waited for the rest of her group. She was tired and cold and generally Not Happy about the lack of heat and power and completely convinced this was the wrong class for her.

Dōjima made a face and flopped down next to Peyton. "I have no idea what he's talking about," she admitted cheerfully. "Does that make me a bad leader?"

Re: Group 2

"If it does, then I'm one too," Peyton admitted. "I'm so lost here."

Re: Group 2

[identity profile] dojima-hime.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
"I mean, anyone can spout off slogans, it doesn't make you a leader. I can say 'heat for everyone!', and it doesn't mean anything unless I do it," Dōjima mused. "Unless I start a bonfire in the classroom with the desks, but I doubt that's what he wants me to do."

Re: Group 2

"Though it might make us warmer," Peyton said. "I get cranky when I'm this cold and I know my brain doesn't work as well."

Re: Group 3

Inara looked around. "Do we start small, or big and work downwards to the details?"

Chad had no idea. Not really, anyway. So his expression might have looked faintly apologetic to his partners as he suggested, "Big stuff first?"

Big stuff first. Ichigo could think big. He could also blurt out the first thing that came to mind. "Free health care? That's big."

"Definitely very big," said Hoshi. "It'll have a lot of details, though."

YOU ARE JUST JEALOUS.

Of what, I dunno.

BUT JEALOUS.
