Leadership: Wednesday, Period 1, Class 2. (1/14/09)

"In last week's class gave us a snapshot of what we'll be covering over the rest of the semester," Nathan said as he passed around the day's handouts. "Good leaders are not mindless leaders. They are leaders who look at the angles and ask the basic questions. Should they be in charge? Why? How?

"Today we're going to start on the how." Nathan moved back to his desk. "As you can see in your handouts, there are different kinds of leadership styles. Some of you showed the styles that you're more comfortable with last week. In today's class I'd like you to pair up and embody these styles. Pick at least one each, and use those styles on each other. The leadership challenge that you're facing is how to solve the strike we're currently dealing with with the machines." Nathan couldn't believe that he'd said that out loud and that it was true.

"Doesn't matter what position you pick. Just use that leadership style to come to a decision and try to implement it."

"No, but I don't think personal gain is enough for me to exhaust myself," Lee decided. "I need the deal sweetened."

"I told you what I need," Lee said. "I think that incentive would be enough for me to do what you want."

"And who said you're in a position to bargain?" Ichigo wanted to know. "I'm not going to be the one who get laughed at if you don't do your push ups."

"I can ignore laughter," Lee said. "Everyone gets laughed at once in their life."

"Eh, worst things have happened," Lee said. "There's just no benefit of me listening to you. None at all."

"Suit yourself," Ichigo sagged back in his chair and considered his paper. "So coaching those laundry machines might not work, huh?"

"I think it would have worked better with a whistle," Ichigo said thoughtfully.

"Whistling at the things on strike, you mean?" Lee asked. "Or me?"

"Well..." he glanced at Lee. "You mostly. Do those laundry machines even hear anything?"

"You know, I dunno," Lee admitted. "They're on strike so they're somewhat sentient, right?"

"True, but... They don't have ears," he reasoned and shook his head. "It'd be best if they do, because I don't think leading negotiations with something deaf would get very far."

"Well, I'm sure they'd understand somehow," Lee decided, "even if it meant just watching body language."

"Done then," Ichigo nodded. "So how would you negotiate through a strike in only body language?"

"Try to look open and welcoming," Lee said. "Let them know I'm not a threat and I merely want them to listen so we can all be happy."

"You can't be sure what a laundry machine finds a threat, though," Ichigo reasoned and he must be insane.

"Well, as long as I don't look like I'm going to kick it, I think that would look non threatening," Lee said. "I'm sure they're getting kicked a lot."

Ichigo shook his head. "Man, this is so screwed up. If I didn't know better, I'd think it's a conspiracy from the school to show us what could happen in the future if computers get too smart."
