"Hey guys!" Marshall said, his mouth full of...something. He chewed and swallowed before talking again. "Today we're going to be talking about bar food."

He pointed at the long table in the front where there was various kinds of finger foods. "Bar food is used to soak up the alcohol in your system so you don't get so drunk that you're unable to hit on somebody. Or, if you're happily married, it's there to munch on while you watch your single friends hit on people. Either way, it's good. If you hit up a bar during happy hour then you can find this stuff for real cheap. You know when it's even cheaper? Right before closing because the bar is trying to get rid of the food."

Marshall knew a lot about bars.

"Okay, so bar food is mostly stuff you eat with your hands. Nachos, french fries, pretzels, beer nuts, onion rings, mozzarella sticks. If you're real lucky there will be some sliders on the menu," Marshall said, pointing to the burgers on the table. "And, last but certainly not least, buffalo wings. For those of you who aren't familiar with them, they aren't made of buffalo. They're chicken. And they come in different levels of heat. I prefer the more mild stuff but if I'm feeling particularly daring and there's enough blue cheese dressing around then I can crank it up to hot."

"So you've got a little bit of everything up here to dig into. There's the usual array of drinks in the back of the room," Marshall said. "There's also non-alcoholic beer and margaritas back there too. I tend to stay away from those but you guys go right ahead."

"Oh, crap," Hurley said. "Sorry, I didn't know. You're from... somewhere else, huh?"

"Far north of any human kingdom, over the Iron Mountains."

"Cool," Hurley said. "I'm Hurley. I'm from Santa Monica."

"I am called Blysse," Firekeeper said, around a mouthful of nachos. She really did love food where she didn't have to worry about what utensil she was supposed to be using. "He," she used a nacho to point to the large wolf, "is Blind Seer."

"Dude," Hurley said. "Hi there, big fella." He gave a little cheese-fry wave to Blind Seer. Either he did not realize waving to a blind wolf would be fruitless, or he was hoping the name was just... colorful.

"So, like. Awesome means... really really good?" he hoped that'd explain it.

"I see," Firekeeper nodded gravely. "Yes, then. This class is awesome."

Hurley gave her a thumbs up. "If you ever need, like, a translator for weird slang? I can totally help."

Firekeeper smiled at Hurley. People had offered to help her read, but this was certainly new. And appreciated. "Thank you," she said. "I am sure I will be needing your help with words many times."

"Yeah, I guess it's one thing to, like, learn English. And another to understand how much folks totally, like, break it, I guess."

"We is not even calling it English, in my world," Firekeeper shrugged. "There, it is being known as Pellish."

"Dude, that has to be confusing," Hurley said. "Cause they probably don't have any of the same slang as us."

"Is, somewhat," Firekeeper nodded.

"So, liking the fries?" Hurley asked.

"The taste is pleasant," Firekeeper admitted. "But, I not think these is very good for strength, health."

"Yeah, true," Hurley said. "But stuff that is never really tastes good."

"Elk taste good," Firekeeper shrugged. Of course, to her anything that didn't contain too much in the way of spices tasted good.

"I've never had elk," Hurley said. "Maybe we'll get it in class sometime."
