Journalism: Thursday, Period 4, Class 1

The bell rang. Jonah immediately launched into his introduction. "Everyone here? Good! If anyone isn't, they'll have to catch up later. My name is J. Jonah Jameson, publisher of the Daily Bugle newspaper out of New York. I'm here to teach you kids how to be journalists. Stick with me and you'll be all-time greats. Show up late, slack off, or be an idiot and you'll be a complete failure in life who nobody will ever love. Sorry, but it's true."

"In order to become a good journalist, you have to have five things. One, an eye for a story. Two, a good memory or good note-taking abilities. Three, your head out of your butt enough to think on your feet and ask good questions when you need to. Four, the dedication to find out whatever it is you need to. And five, you have to figure out for yourself. I could tell you, but if I did that, I'd have to flunk you and I don't want to do any of that on the first day...."

"Okay, that's a lie. I'd love to flunk all of you on the first day, but that's just because it would be fun for me."

"We're going to start nice and slow this week. But considering that we're talking about how to make it as a newsman... or woman... 'slow' is a relative term. So let's do this. You," Jonah pointed to a random person, "give me your name, why you think you can make it as a journalist, and why I should give the tiniest bit of a crap about either of those. Go! Now!"

[OOC: Syllabus is here. Not that Jonah passed it out. This won't stop him from referencing it, though. Please glance at it for it contains important OOC info about the class.]

"Hi, I'm Amber Atkins, and I'm here because my idol is Diane Sawyer. I want to learn how to write well and be able to tell a worthy story."

She bit her lip and couldn't keep the dorky grin off her face. "I want to be just like her."

It would probably very soon be revealed that having his exgirlfriend and his kinda-girlfriend in the same class with a guy who might be a little bit of either a jerk or a hardass could be very bad for Cal.

Well, and Worf. But it wouldn't be as much fun to pass notes to Worf.

He almost held off on doing anything, since he'd stood his ground with passing a note with Claire, but the temptation was too great. He just had to. If only to see the look on Amber's face, and then he resolved that that would be the end of it.

As subtly as he could, he passed a very small note over.

Who the hell is Diane Sawyer???

The note surprised her, only because she didn't think Cal would dare the chance in this class.

But whatever.

And didn't everyone know who Diane Sawyer was?

She's only the greatest news and television reporter in the history of news and television reporters.

D'uh.

She just as subtly passed it back.

Well, I've never heard of her.

Of course, this fact didn't surprise Cal, considering that Diane Sawyer didn't start broadcasting on a national level until two years after where he'd come from (not that he knew that, either), but it was a good, easy thing to get a rise out of Amber over.

That's too bad. She's great.

Oh, and hey, hi to you too.

To that, Cal just smirked, lifting a hand, but then cocking his head toward Jameson to say that, hey, it's just the first class; didn't want to push it.

Who cared if he'd probably end up having detention, anyway?

Amber muttered under her breath, but hopefully loud enough that he could hear her if he tried hard enough, "Chicken ass."

Oh, he heard. Cal heard and lifted an eyebrow and had a mutter to return, "Better chicken ass than a fat ass."

Ha, take that, Atkins.

Although talking about detentions so much lately and remembering his only earned one was hopefully going to keep him in check this time.

She snorted. "Yah, you like it."

Amber ignored the first part. "Oh my gosh I know it. She's so freaking annoying."

"I'm only seventeen. I don't have any wrinkles."

A beat.

"You should think about bringing in a camera."

Amber deflated just a small measure.

"Fine," she mumbled.

She perked up. "Ooh! Then I hope you teach me how to be good enough!"

"I'm nothing if not... observant, sir."
