Library; Monday [ 01/05 ].

On the list of things one would expect to find when returning to work in the library, there were books. Maybe paper. The computer, to be sure.

Bananas were not exactly on that list, but, cup of sugar with coffee and cream in it in hand, bannans were exactly what Cal found on the front desk when he came to open that morning.

Well, at least it was very reassuring to know that Doctor Jones cared about their potassium intake for the new semester.

And it wasn't just bananas on the desk, Cal had very soon noticed. Every other book he ended up sorting was about bananas. Growing bananas, harvesting bananas, cooking bananas, even a very vividly illustrated volume on banana costumes.

Cal started to suspect that this went a little deeper than the librarian's hand.

Needless to say, Cal was not too terribly surprised to find a banana in each of empty slots when he went to put the books on the shelves.

Back at the desk, Cal thought about the bananas and came to the conclusion that, clearly, a very stealthy monkey must have gotten loose from special collections or something, and all the bananas were Doctor Jones' attempts to try and capture the creature.

Cal didn't exactly feel like dealing with a monkey today, so he hoped the damn hairy ape stayed lost.

The library's closed, for Cal to step out and have a smoke break and find some food that wasn't a banana.

Back from his lunch break, Cal put up his feet on the desk and finally gave in to peeling the banana. He just threw the peel out in front of the desk, praying that someone actually did come in and slip on it. It didn't happen like that in the real world, he knew, but this wasn't the real world. It was Fandom.

Cal knew that there wasn't a fifth period for classes this semester, but he wasn't sure if that meant there wasn't a fifth period for the library. But it wasn't like he had anywhere else he needed to be, so he stuck around a bit longer before closing up.

...I knew there was a reason I wanted to get bananas this week during grocery shopping.

Claire stopped in to say hi after class.

At least, she meant to say hi.

What actually came out as she surveyed the library was "...bananas?"

Cal shrugged, lifting his hands as an added expression of his cluelessness.

"Maybe there's a monkey on the loose," he offered. "I have no idea."

"Maybe," Claire said, then frowned. "Wait, would the monkey leave bananas everywhere? I thought they ate them."

Icons like this one remind me why I bother with my obsessive icon hunting.

And I'm almost certain that it's from Red Eye, which means he's probably doing something very evil, but I don't care. It's still adorable evil, dammit.

"Well, that's just it," Cal explained. "The bananas don't belong to the monkey. They're monkey bait. I just hope Dr. Jones doesn't expect me to catch the damn thing if it works."

"If he does, you get hazard pay. Seriously. It might have some weird monkey virus," Claire said.

"Then I'm definitely not going to help catch it," Cal snorted a little. "No amount of workman's comp is worth some weird monkey virus."

"Hell no," Claire agreed. "Plus have you ever seen a monkey on TV? They're freaky strong."

Claire may have been a little fuzzy on the difference between monkeys and apes.

"Oh, hello," she said, tilting her head at all the bananas. "Have you, perhaps, been redecorating?"

"Oh, great," Cal muttered. "Now I'm going to spend the rest of the day paranoid about monkeys. Thanks, Claire."

He didn't seem all that annoyed, though. Of course, the dripping sarcasm was mostly to cover up the fact that he was feeling nervous about it just a bit now.

"That's me, spreading sunshine wherever I go," Claire informed him, undaunted. "Anyhow, I prepared you. Now you won't try to trap a rabid monkey in your manly arms."

Cal stared at Viki for a moment, and realized he was going to be doing stuff like this a lot this semester, wasn't he?

"Yes," he answered, with a straight-forward sort of seriousness that wasn't in the least bit true, "I have. I figured there were enough books. Thought we could get some bananas. Next week, I'll be adding maybe some broccoli, or perhaps some Buicks, or another such B-word item."

"Or maybe some bells, barnacles, and boots," she replied lightly, "if you require assisstance coming up with more words, though I'm sure not, depending on your reasons for working here or not. Perhaps you just like the smell of books? I wouldn't assume."

"Wait a second," Cal said, "this is all a ploy, isn't it? Come here and throw me off the trail so that you can capture it yourself and steal my glory."

"I'm only in it for the reward money," Claire said, a mischievous glint in her eye the only hint she was joking. "There's big cash in hunting library monkeys, y'know."

"I could also do buttons or buckles or bandannas," Cal added, with a slight shrug, and a slight thought to wonder why he was even having this conversation. "I don't really need help; if I run short, I'm sure I could consult a dictionary, but your suggestions will be taken into consideration. Thanks."

"You're welcome enough, if you want to be," she said. "And presuming that you are, in fact, working today, I am looking for two things under the letter 'K'. Though, one might in fact be under 'J' instead as last name seems to suit. So B's may have to wait."
