Hey, cute BIG guy in the shadows. That was perfect for Claire's project, and she walked up to him with a little smile. "Hey, can I ask you something kind of weird?"

"Right, so -- I'm Claire, first, hi, and I'm trying to get into art school and I was going to do a portfolio of student portraits for that, and I kind of wanted to get some of the new people. Is it okay to take your picture?"

That was more or less all one breath. Claire knew she was acting nervous.

Emmett thought about this for half a second before deciding it couldn't hurt anything. "Uh, sure, go right ahead. I'm Emmett."

"Cool name," Claire told him, crouching to get the shot from an angle that would emphasize his height. She snapped the shutter a few times, then tucked her camera away. "Annnnd that should be good. So where are you coming from, Emmet?"

"Forks, Washington," he said. "Hope you got a good shot. I can come off as kind of pale in pictures."

Yes, he chuckled a little at his own joke.

"Hi!" Triela called and waved cheerfully as she spotted him. The way-too-tan girl walked his way with a grin. "You new? I'm Triela."

"Emmett," he said, giving her a wave. Yeah, he pretty much looked like a ghost compared to her. "I take it you're not new?"

"Been here a year now, so no." She smirked. "Not a people person?" she asked, nodding to indicate the shadowed area he was sticking to.

"Oh, no, I love people. They're awesome," he said. And they smelled good. "It's crowds of people that can be kind of intimidating."

Yeah, the six foot five guy was claiming to be intimidated by something. That's believable.

Triela, who was nowhere near six feet tall, looked up with a smirk. "Why?" she teased. "You afraid you might trip over someone in a crowd?"

"Tripping I can handle, believe me," Emmett said. "The people I trip over are in more trouble than I am in that case."

"I'm Emmett, nice to meet you," he said. "No, it's not boring. You find out a lot of stuff from observing."

It also helped that vampire hearing allowed him to hear what pretty much everyone was saying.

Emmett chuckled. "Kind of like a spy, except I'm not looking for anything specific. It's not as boring as you would think. There's some interesting people here."

Turtle was trying to meet as many of the new kids as she could, which meant sometimes having to suck it up and introduce herself to big guys in the shadows, which wasn't creepy at all, really.

"Hi!" She smiled tentatively, waving. "Welcome to Fandom; I'm Turtle. Nice to meet you."

"I'm Emmett," he said, waving back at her. He had on his most friendly smile. Not the creepy one that he saved for scaring people. "Turtle, huh? That's a nickname, right?"

"Oh, yeah," Turtle said quickly, nodding assuredly. "My parents are weird, but not completely evil. Well..."

She hesitated on that point. "Maybe they are, considering that Turtle is still better than my real name. Which I'm not telling you, so don't ask, but, no offense, I don't tell anyone."

He still couldn't believe Pete and Ashlee named their kid Bronx Mowgli.
