Library [17.12]

It was a close thing, but Karal and Altra made it back from Valdemar just in time to open the library. (It's okay - they brought Aravis, Dean and the two critters back, as well.)

Of course, neither of them had had a great deal of sleep while away, and nothing even resembling downtime. Which would be why it took them a little while to realise Karal had just filled the kettle with eggnog.

In their defence, it had come out of the tap.

No Karal and no Altra, for they were both off in class.

Karal and Altra were there, just not visible, as Karal had decided to tidy the shelves.

Tidying continued, and Karal couldn't help thinking that t was odd how the periodicals always seemed to end up folded all over each other.

If Karal didn't know better, he'd suspect them of carrying on torrid affairs once the lights were out.

Having had no tea and little sleep, Karal was asleep in a chair with Altra curled up in his lap.

They'd ducked out just before lunch was over and picked up some bottled water.

This meant Karal could make some Karsite tea.

This meant he was now wide awake.

He used his new found energy to do returns, and to send out notices for overdue library books. It was almost the end of semester, after all.

Having done his library duties for the day, Karal and Altra were reading through the pile of papers he'd brought back with him.

I HAVE A NEW ROUTER. I HAVE NET AGAIN. This fills me with glee. Stupid router breaking.

Bored and tired of being this way again, and she was sure it was all John's fault, a kitten walked into a library. And decided to meow till she got some attention.

Altra peered over the edge of the desk, and snickered slightly when he saw who it was. "Hello," Karal said, happy to leave the overdue notices for a bit. "You look familiar."

It was Fandom -- talking to animals as if they were people just made sense, since half the time they were, and he was sure he'd seen this kitten before. "I can offer you all the eggnog you'd like."

Yeah, she'd better look familiar. Jaina tilted her head, though. She didn't know what egg nog was. Was it something she could eat as a kitten without getting all sick? Because getting sick as a kitten would just be undigified.

She reared up her legs to attempt to jump up onto the counter... and failed miserably, as she was tiny. She meant to do that.

Of course she had. And, as Karal came around the counter to hold his hands out flat on the floor, he remembered where he'd seen this particular kitten before, and who she was. "Jaina," he said and did not in any way smile. "May I offer you a lift to the counter?"

Altra, tail flicking lazily back and forth, was watching them both with mild amusement.

She lifted her kitty chin in a way that said she didn't need his help and she could do this herself, but she would let him help because she shouldn't have to do it herself anyway.This was said mainly through tail flicks.

Being a long term associate of a Firecat - who was nodding in approval at Jaina - Karal understood the gist of what she was saying.

Carefully, he picked her up and set her on the counter. Altra even shifted slightly so there was more room. "There, now you can see what's going on a bit better."

Like it hadn't even occurred to her till he said that, Jaina looked around, studying the library from her new, highly superior vantage point. From here, the whole library looked like hers. Which it was, of course. Everyplace she could possibly go was all hers. That's just the way things were.

She made a little mewling noise of satisfaction, as if to say that she was good with her new rule of the library, at least till she got bored and wandered off.

Karal couldn't help grinning at her. "Wait there," he told her, and hurried off, returning with two bowls of milk. He set one in front of Altra and, with a flourish, one in front of Jaina. "Eggnog might be a bit much for a kitten," he told her. "But I know this is safe."

If there was one thing Sun-priests knew how to do, it was to treats cats properly.

The human version of Jaina who would be later cleaning her drunken bunny boyfriend off of all the egg nog he'd ingested would thank him. Right now she was set more on "ooh milk" and with an appreciative tail flick, stuck her head in the bowl to lap it up.

This would be highly embarrassing later.
